In a rising cap environment it always makes sense to defer cap hits as much as possible so the $$$ takes up a lower % of the cap, it makes the deals cheaper. The catch is you have to make the base salary money guaranteed so you're sacrificing the ability to easily cut/trade a player in return for cap flexibility. A restructure doesn't mean the contract was bad or there's some mistake being correct. All big money contracts are signed knowing you will eventually restructure if you want to keep the player or cut before you hit the large cap hits on the back end on the deal.

Restructuring is perfectly fine as long as you're selective. Shaq is one of the only players that 100% be on the roster this year and won't be cut or traded, so it makes sense. Where you get into trouble is the mess with Paradis last year where he clearly should have been cut but now we're incurring a large cap charge because they thought it was really worth hanging on to him last year and decided to restructure.

Shaq’s 5M puts it at 31M. 
 

Take off 3M for Thomas’ first year

5-6M for draft class

3M or more for practice squad

1.5M for 52-53rd players. 
 

  Now it’s back to about 18M. Anyone that goes on IR has to be replaced Need some room to operate during season. For a team with the worst QB situation in the NFL. As well as OL. So how much help is that going to bring when every team with more assets wants these players as well. And how many will want to come play for a lame duck HC that mortgaging the teams future. That’s where the team is at right now.

We was suppose to have apt this year and that’s not the case. It changes when they make dumb moves especially on qbs like they did last two years.

That is not a restructure -- it's ''fake money'' years to spread out a signing bonus. It's why they are referred to as ''voidable''.

A voidable year is an ‘extra’ year on the length of the contract that the team and the player intend to void. In other words, it is a “dummy” year on the contract that the player will never play or get paid for, and it exists for the sole purpose of lowering the annual cap hit, especially in the first year of the contract.

 

Are you sure voidable years do not affect dead cap?  I get it spreads out signing bonuses to create cap space, but also impacts dead cap during those voided years, no?

That’s because they already paid him that money long ago. The restructuring of Paradis caused them to have to use voidable years to fit him in last year. That’s why he has a cap hit THIS year while not playing here.

It’s the same thing. The minute the player is no longer under contract with the team, the full amount hits. Even OTC includes it in dead cap totals now.

Thing is - they are either way.

The difference is, this way cripples the future.

It’s just really hard for fans to envision losing Gilmore, possibly Jackson, and Reddick, seeing Rhule evaluate FA olineman wasting more money on Irv/Elf type signings, starting center is gone (though he wasn’t great, have a single top 100 pick and then marching down to the field with Darnold or Tribuski or a rookie and pulling out a winning season.

I mean it’s a sign when worthwhile players and coach don’t want to come here. 

You’re basically asking Rhule to do much much better with an even worse team than he already had.

It’s not hard to see why fans don’t really thinks that’s possibly or being realistic, and so to fug up the future Hurney style to do it is a bit confusing.

But you’re totally right. Rhule and Tep have fought tooth and nail to avoid a proper, inevitable rebuild and it’s baffeling.

Don’t these years end up creating dead cap though? Or is that not how it works?

      I'm with you.  Even an extra 3rd would help.  None of the players you listed are elite though.  Sadly there are very few of those in this draft, but there are a lot of good players in the late first and into the second. We need to realize that we can't get all our needs in this year's draft.  We know we need some sort of edge, a safety, and I feel we need to use one of first 4 picks on a CB, preferably 3rd at latest.  And I want to draft an OT in 3rd to learn behind Moton this year. The extra 2nd would be huge.  2 things Bear Hands has noted in other threads, we can get a rusher in the mid rounds of the first, and if a good LT is available at our pick we should be able to get a deal. I'm ok.  If the media takes are close, trading back to around 15 should get us a second, and since our second is near the end of that round, getting one earlier opens up a whole lot of opportunities.  Either way, Canales builds his infrastructure with this draft.  Next year, with all our picks and probably picking somewhere between 10 and 15, we can get real stars.   All of this depends on hitting on picks this year.

      You got the gist of his main issue. He plays LB or whatever on D, but hates to tackle and contact. That's the summary.  I normally have a wide margin of " Hey vet min/bring him for try out/maybe he changed/etc etc". But he can not be trusted, * but he did just have his "best" season. He's like those RB that refuse to run between the tackles, bounce everything outside...they too are scared of contact. That's like the whole point of NFL, he's able to trick and athlete his way for 5 years, props to him and his agent.  Me personally I view him like virus, I wouldn't want him on film shying away from hitting while the rookies&UDFA are looking for how the Panthers do things. Plus Im the biggest sucker there is about giving former 1st, 2nd, etc another chances. Just not someone who doesn't want to play NFL and fools those with his god given gifts.  ____________________________________________________________   \ Not to add another layer to this, but I feel contact and hitting its the biggest problem for the NFL. I sorta agree with TEs, WRs, and RBs either going out of bounds or falling to the ground to avoid a solid hit(this goes out the window for 1st downs, SB, etc.) Like if a WR caught a deep slant and already gained 17 yards, but here comes a safety with a great angle, Im all for that WR to fall on the ground...... ugh...... But I think the opposite for my defense. I feel this topic is central sun hot and NFL has done a great job in avoiding it. Im surprised NFL is still allowed, I have huge doubts in the future.

      not sure if carolina picks a WR in this draft, they have some young WR already and will let them develop. Need another vet imo.  I think carolina is going to pass more to the RB's this coming season, look for them to move heaven and earth for Cam Skatteboo.  I really hope they go TE Warren in the 1st. That would add another dynamic to this offense.
