The Panthers have had 206 picks in the NFL draft. Only 3 tackles have been selected in RD1 and only 2 QBs have been taken in RD1. But the Panthers have drafted 5 linebackers in RD1.

Corners have been taken 4 times, RBs 4 times, WR 3 times, DE 3 times, and a DT 3 times.

To break things down a little more, a QB has been drafted 7 times by the Panthers. Tackles have been taken 14 times. Guards 10 times with only 1 in the round 2. Centers have been drafted 3 times with only 1 in round 2. The Panthers have also taken a guy they just call OL 5 times late in the draft.

The Panthers have only ever drafted 1 punter and 1 kicker. The kicker in 2017 and the punter in 2012. LB seems to be the most common draft pick. I didn't count them, but LB shows up an awful lot. There have been five times in the franchise's history they didn't take a QB or any Oline prospects in the draft. Twice in the first four years and three times in the last six.

Linebacker is one of the least risky positions. Everyone talks about Hurneys masterful 1st round picks but his 1st round picks weren't all risky either. Peppers was the best player in the draft. Gross was the highest rated tackle. RBs aren't 1st round picks IMO, there's too much production available in much later rounds.

We need to focus on the hard to get positions with our early picks and fill in the lesser demand with FA and later rounds.

QB's I kindof understand but its borderline criminal to not take lineman in the first

Looking at history, none of the numbers are super shocking in regards to first round selections.

The Panthers have made 27 first round picks.  Looking at every first round pick since our team began, the relative breakdown of first round picks across all teams looks like this, and our expected picks should look like this:

Honestly, we're not statistically all that far off the averages.  Our biggest outliers are that we've favored LB's and RB's more than the rest of the league.

Given how many first round LB's we've drafted, it shouldn't be all that surprising we've had some great ones.  If we were running a base 3-4, it might not even be statistically surprising to see that many.

Jordan Gross took up what a decade at LT under Hurney? He made a great draft pick in Gross and didn't need to worry about LT for a decade. To compare, moron Gettleman paid a kings ransom for LT Matt Kalil who couldn't even play the position.

But yes overall the Panthers have been RB and LBer crazy, and our blueprint makes no sense whatsoever for a modern football team.

Gross was a great RT that the team moved to LT after injuries to whoever had been there. It just happened that Gross was a good LT too. So, they just left him on the left side.

total number if picks is irrelevant to our first round picks

You misunderstand.  That's the total number of first round picks in the league since our inception.  This tells you what the league as a whole values in first round picks.  And we aren't all that different except the noted positions.

We have had 27 first round picks and 9 of those have been a LB or RB, that just really makes no sense.

You don't spend 1/3rd of your first round picks on those positions.

Out of those picks we really hit a homerun on 1, Luke. The rest of the guys were nice, but not all time greats that you would expect when you pick a low value position at a high value pick.

It’s a little misleading the 206 is total picks and then it is broken down to round 1 only. A lot of it depends on where you pick too. A late 1st rounder on a LB can have good value IMO. Luke was picked high, but I think him being a generational talent makes up for it. We have ignored OL for a while now and it’s shameful. I mean our LT hasn’t been really addressed since Gross retired. We tried with Kalil and Oher, but no luck. Hopefully Fitt/Rhule/whoever is making the calls gives some major attention to the OL soon.
