If we draft a QB, I want Carson Strong

Where were these fast, athletic QBs in the Super Bowl? Just learning you can’t succeed in the NFL without one…

Reading defenses and good decision making is what makes a great QB.  The running around stuff, arm like a cannon, etc are just a bonus.

If you can't do the first part, you won't be a successful NFL QB (and definitely won't take your team to the Super Bowl).

Pretty much.

People fall in love with exciting plays and highlight reels. And while those are fun, accurate passing and consistency in making reads are the traits that win the most ballgames.

If the first thing you're looking for in a quarterback is mobility or athleticism, you're doing it wrong.

Carson is showing that he has the mental aspects necessary to be great in the NFL. The more I look into the kid the more I like him.

That arm IS a huge bonus that makes him worthy of being the first QB picked, along with youth.

Carson Strong sunk like a rock in the Senior Bowl.

Worst of the six QBs there. Zappe looked better.

Slow adapting, unathletic, and weak command of an offense. I'd rather have Darnold.

That Fresno State breakdown is a joke. Watch the whole game and watch how Strong struggles. When he needs to be clutch he folds.

Carson Strong back to pass. Three man rush gets to Strong. Balls out! Strong sulks on the field with his head down with 2 minutes to go. His receivers better be able to jump for his passes. They tend not to be in the receivers area code. He demonstrated that in the Senior Bowl too. Trouble reading defenses and forces balls into double and triple coverage.

Think a cross between Jay Cutler and Kerry Collins. You really want that at QB? Great arms. Nothing much for winning a game or being clutch. He can hang his head with the best of them.

Mountain West coaches figured out Strong and punished him. NFL coaches will not be worried about facing Strong.

If Strong is the QB, get comfortable with hearing "nearly intercepted".

The draft process for QB's is so poor.  It's all shorts and t-shirts where the athletic, big armed guys shine.  JaMarcus Russell looked like a god at his pro day (and we all know how that turned out).

It's boring but having QB's dissect white board formations with coaches asking questions would be far more instructive on who's going to make it as an NFL QB and who won't.   But that's not nearly as fun as watching some kid throw a 50 yard frozen rope while the crowd ooo's and ahhh's.

For all our failed gambles, this guy would be the ultimate moderate risk high reward prospect even at 6.

He already reading and checking on his own. The IQ is there. He leads that offense he's changing plays and taking advantage. He has NFL height(6'4") weight, arm strength. Ops last video the guy proclaims Strong has the best deep ball in this class. I agree. It's effortless for him.

This team has done a lot of stupid stuff. Taking Strong, a potential prototype franchise QB who checks all the boxes at a young age as a JUNIOR wouldn't be the dumbest thing. That rookie contract could be gold on that guy.

Oh great, another QB evaluation based on height and weight. How is Kyle Trask doing, BTW?

IDK, Russle looked like a kid with a great arm, very bad brain and a body showing signs of lack of care in the offseason. Outside of the mainstream media and rabid college fans, where politics / money / loyalty come before quality, he wasn't a great prospect at the professional level and had a ton of flags.

I agree that the process is broke where the fringe guys get too much hype, I still think it heavily relies on workouts and interviews. From what I have heard about that, it's also why it's a flawed process. I can't believe that there is no team that I know of that uses any consultants during the interview process. Like there are firms out there that help hire people and qualify the potential hires. Just crazy to me. That's how we ended up with coaches asking about sexual preferences in weird improved situations.

I still think arm strength matters. I wish there was a clear and firm line in that evaluation but I also think the difference in the balls plays apart of this failure.

I feel that Rhule is going to draft a Qb this year no matter what. I wish he wouldn't but what else is new with him  So with that I'm interested in knowing which one of these Qbs in the draft is the workhorse in the film room, can read a defense,  and go through his progessions. I know none are close to a finished product because it's not a frontrunner. I want a smart guy.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
