Have you observed the NFL for any length of time AT ALL?  Have you actually LOOKED at our roster?

When you talk about cutting a player, the first question you ask is "Can I replace that player for the money I get back?"  As bad as Erving and Daley are, the answer is no.  You can't replace them for the money you get back.  As someone else already pointed out, Paradis is unchangeable.  That's a void year.

If we restructure anyone, I promise it's no benefit.  We keep doing stupid crap like that and it's putting us at a disadvantage constantly.  Whether it's "dead cap" or "void years", we must stop kicking the can down the road.  We need to take our lumps NOW, while expectations are low, and go forward with responsible contracts.

Now the really funny part.  Trade Robby Anderson.  I mean, come on.  Trade Robby Anderson.  The guy just had a stinker of a season.  His trade value is at an all time low.  Frankly, I think his value is negative.  We'd have to give up something for someone to take him.  Henderson cost us a third round pick, we were the ONLY team to offer that and he did nothing to increase his value.  And again, how do you replace him for 2.4 million?  Same question with AJ Bouye.

The only part that even half makes sense is extending DJ, but you aren't going to do that by spending LESS money next year.

People keep wanting to do crazy crap next year - acting like we have a chance to make noise.  We don't.  1000%.  We need to use next year to purge the mistakes of the past in a responsible way.  Stop doing crap that puts us further behind the curve.  Take the lumps, fire the coach, install a front office structure that makes sense and move forward with a new coach and solid foundation.

Only issue is we have $16.5M before factoring in Luvu's Cap hit plus whatever we end up needing for draft picks depending on trading back. Accelerating the void years is the only math not working out for me, but I dunno exactly how the dead cap works

Getting rid of the void years is a "nice to have" not a requirement.  Void years just kick the salary cap problems down the road.

If the rest of the plan were enacted, I'd be more than happy to give up the void year acceleration.   Anything to be done with those ridiculous contracts for Darnold & Anderson.

Their contracts voided on about 2/10/22 and the whole total is due(HR-4M and MP 8.2M) towards 2022 cap. That ends it. Nothing else. But both sites make it confusing by amounts showing up in 2023. That isn’t how it works. Like dead cap, it’s due when contract ends/cut/trade. 
 

   As for Darnold and RA, nothing besides traveling back in time and using common sense. That was your salary cap “ninja” at his finest once again. They sure don’t want to prolong those disasters.

Good info, didn't know about the acceleration of voidable years.  I knew you had to pay it, but didn't know all of it accelerated into the next year when the void happened.  When it's spread out over a couple seasons, I can see the temptation, but knowing that it all comes due at once, it becomes even more baffling and dangerous.

Bottom line, it's just another destructive mechanism for teams to crush their future with.  We've got to stop mortgaging the future of the team for the immediate present.  I know we talked about a long term plan when we hired Rhule, but the actions we've taken haven't indicated that we actually believed it.

Now here we are two seasons on, still not any better than we were, with an arguably worse cap situation and even less talent on the roster for the upcoming season.

It's working, 1000%, we just can't see it!

$18M for Shaq next year...I like the guy and I wouldn't say no to the contract if I were him, but yikes.

Thanks for providing this info on void years.  It's a much more clear explanation than the way Spotrac displays the data, which appears fairly misleading (at least to me):  

I looked over several web pages on void years and they said exactly what you did:.  the entire bill for the  voidable years comes due the very first void year that occurs.   So the 8,293,332 amount is on the Panthers 2022 salary cap.  And there are no further charges in 2023 (even though the spreadsheet seems to suggest it's 4,146,666).  The salary cap hit for Paradis in 2023 is 0.  

It still sucks that the Panthers are paying over 8M for a player not even on the roster anymore.  But at least these extra charges will not continue after the current season.

I can understand Anderson's frustration with the bad QB play in Carolina.  And I wouldn't be surprised if Carolina coaching staff / management was pretty tired of all his antics at this point.   

But with a trade Anderson's dead money would eat up virtually all of the 2022 cap.  So some big restructuring would have to take place (for Anderson or other players or both).  And Carolina would likely have to eat a big chunk of the deal in order to get any draft picks back.  So it would be tough to make it all work.  

But it would be so wonderful to be free of his horrible contract (and lackluster play).
