2009 Draft Mid Season Review

I was thinking about the draft that we had and was wondering if you guys might think that so far that this draft might be one of the worst drafts in the history of the panthers. I know most of the times rookies will not have an impact till the 2nd or 3rd year but it is not looking too good.

Lets take a look.

2nd round 43rd pick: We traded away a costly 1st round 2010 pick for Everette brown. It seems to me with Julius peppers having a bad hand injury that Everette Brown hasn't really stepped it up to his potential. I know he is only a rookie but for some reason I thought us moving up and trading a 1st round pick that he might have been a steal. Looks to me like he wasn't worth the trade.

2nd round, 59th overall pick: Sherrod Martin looks to be a better pick than we thought. He didn't look to good in preseason as a CB but as a safety he looks like a good pickup for us. Now we have only seen him in 4 games but I am hoping that he can hold down our inconsistent Free Safety Position.

3rd round 93rd overall pick: Corey Irvin was a pick that seemed to stump me. He looked decent in preseason and with Maake going down he might have had a chance to show what he could do. He got injured early so we really can not judge how well he might have done so I will give him a pass for this year.

4th round 111th overall pick: Mike Goodson seems to have eric shelton written all over him. Now let me say this, he did look pretty good in preseason but the turnovers and his non inspirational time at Kickoff duties makes me worried that he might be the next ryne robinson.

4th round, 128th overall pick: Tony Fiammetta I thought would be the next coming of Brad Hoover in his prime. He actually has had plenty of chances to show what he can be as a fullback and I am a little concerned that he might not be up to the task. He is still a rookie and I see him having potential but right now without Brad hoover in the lineup he hasn't really been very impressive. When Tyrell Sutton looks better than him at times I get a little concerned.

5th round 163rd overall pick: Duke Robinson was someone I thought might take Keydrick's spot or at least compete. I haven't seen enough of him to make a decision but I think he might be our steal of the draft.

7th round 216th overall pick: Except for Sherrod Martin, Captain Munnerlyn I think is probably our best pick of the draft. It is sad to think that our last pick of the draft might be our best one.

Overall a very poor draft in my opinion. Now we might see a Thomas Davis that looks out of place and a bad draft pick at the start of their career and be able to turn things around and make a name for themselves. But to me in the Marty Hurney era this draft looks like one of the worst drafts we have ever had.

Much too early to talk too much about it, but I am not a huge fan of this draft at all.

Mostly because we traded our 1st for the second consecutive year, and had to give up more than just one to do so.

Was not a fan of the Brown pick now, then and possibly ever. However I will eat my crow if needed, and do it gladly. We would have been drafting in the top half of the draft next season, and we need a big ticket item (QB, CB or DT) that we will not be able to make a play at.

Captain is probably my favorite pick, along with Duke, if he can get it together. There is a reason these two slipped that far, we know why Capt. did, but we don't know why Duke did.....Makes me think a little of Jarrett.

This draft will always be marred by Hurney trading away a number 1 we so desperately need.

Unless Brown makes it to the Hall.

I don't know maybe because everyone with a shred of football sense knows it takes 2-3 years minimum to accurately evaluate a draft class, and yet people still try and do it halfway through a season?

just trying to put my 2 cents in regarding our draft class so far...It doesnt look to promising but ya your right....in 2-3 years we will have a new coach and most of this draft class might not even be on the roster.

Brown: I agree, thus far I am disappointed with his results. But not his effort. If he keeps working hard he may have potential, though I still doubt he will ever be an every down lineman.

Martin: Seems like he has potential to be a decent safety. He's certainly better than Godfrey (which is a poor standard) but he did make some pretty costly mistakes against Miami. I like the pick thus far now that he is at safety. Let's see how things pan out for him.

Irvin: I didn't like the pick much, and I didn't think he was great in preseason. I'd give him another shot next year to show improvement and ability to compete in the NFL. He can't be worse than Hayden right?

Goodson: Despite the hype he hasn't panned out to make any sort of impact other than a negative one (fumbling). Currently Sutton looks like the better asset.

Fiametta: He doesn't have the experience of Hoover so I can give him a pass on not being as good a FB, but I am disappointed with the drops he's had this year. Give him a shot to improve but if he doesn't we may need to look for a FB in free agency.

Robinson: We haven't really seen him this year. He seemed to have potential and was pretty hyped. Let's hope he can replace Vincent and be a better lineman soon.

Munnerlyn: Probably overrated by the Huddle, but he has been a pretty solid nickle. He has a good work ethic and plays hard. I like him and hope that he pans out.

I understand what you are saying but at least give some reasons on why you feel this way...

brown i thought at the time was a good pick up in the 2nd* meaning i thought we could have moved up to get him for much less. seems like we could have traded our 2nd prob our useless 3rd that we used on irving and prob a 5...but in no logic would i give up a 1. dont get me wrong brown still has tons of upside and alot of pass rush moves looks relentless,gets good pressure just not getting there. martin is becoming a nice suprise i thought we should have grabed that smith kid that miami snagged here at 6"4 he could have been a nice addition. irving should have been jarron gilbert other than that so far i havent been impressed. tho the captain has shown alot of heart out there.

It's way too early to tell with most of these guys. How many of them have been given enough time to actually show what they've got?

Martin and Munnerlyn are the only ones who have gotten legitimate playing time so far, and they have both done very well. Both could be mainstays on the defenses for years to come.

Fiametta has been in and out between backing up Hoover and being injured. He seems to block pretty well, though I'd love to see him start to show that pass-catching ability he was so successful with in college. Either way, he's got a great mentor and I'm sure he will develop just fine. Once Hoover retires, be that after this season or not, I think Fiametta will be ready to take over the reigns.

Have not seen Robinson or Irvin nearly enough to come to any conclusions about them. Irvin might get his shot next year, but Robinson is probably on the bench for a while unless someone gets injured.

Everette Brown certainly has not lived up to what we would expect out of someone who we traded a 1st rounder for, but I think he has a bright future as a panther. He has the work ethic to be a great pass rusher, and with his smaller size it's not at all surprising that he hasn't thrived in his first year. Gotta wait and see with him.

Goodson is getting stiffed, I think. Yes, he sucks at returning kicks, and Sutton should hold down that job for the rest of the year, but Goodson hasn't been handed off to enough for us to see what kind of HB he is. He looked really impressive running the ball in preseason, and I think if one of our top two went down, he would do well if he had to be regularly rotated in.

It looks like there aren't any real stars coming out of this draft, and I agree, it's probably one of the worst since Fox/Hurney got here, but I wouldn't label it a complete failure. I see Munnerlyn, Martin, Fiametta and Robinson all as guys who have a good chance of starting for us in the future.
