The Giants spent a lot in FA this year and the Seahawks have gone with big trades.  There's more to it than just spending a lot.

Lol the giants big free agent signing was Kenny Golladay. The rams and the bucs went after multiple pro bowl players

I said it back then, but Gettleman had a full on fan club on here that thought he was the second coming of Bills-era Polian.

He completely blew our best opportunity to win a Superbowl to date.  We should've had at least a 3 year window to contend for a championship annually...  and I said it when he left that he set us back at least 5 years even after his departure.

Luckily for us, Rhule is setting us back another 5-10.  Great times.

That post Super Bowl 2016 offseason was the worst in franchise history. Gettleman decimated any future this team had with Cam in a single offseason after a Super Bowl appearance. fuging disgusting.

Imagine if the Panthers were actually aggressive in trying to trade for Joe Thomas all those years with a prime Cam Newton.

The last time the Panthers spent a first round pick on the offensive line was 2008 with Jeff Otah. Let that sink in for a minute. 14 fuging years.

The Bucs and now Rams are proving that whole “only built through the draft , superstar teams don’t win” narrative wrong.

All those years we wasted with a prime Cam, we were the cheapest team free agency. We never went after big names, we never we traded for anybody outside of Olsen. Bargain bin Gettleman set this franchise back lord knows how long.

Damn; Cam never had not one true legit THREAT at WR. Like a LEGIT guy.

You need to be able to draft well, but also build the team through smart moves in FA. Evaluation and coaching are still critical though. If you are improving your talent (whether by draft or By FA) its gonna improve your team. People in charge need to make good choices on value and production. Sometimes FA moves will benefit more than draft picks, but other times the young, talented players may have more value that those on the FA market or trade Block. The key is the people making those decisions for your team and how the pieces that are gained fit.

Either way decent QB play is a must to win. An imposing OL and DL will really help too.

On the flip side, the Bucs and rams are about a season away from totally imploding.  I get the "win now" approach and totally support it if your team has the key pieces but you better damn well be ready for pain on the back end.  Just watch and see how the saints do in the next few years.

First off, not with Matt Rhule in charge it doesn't.

Second, nobody went harder into free agency and trades than the Patriots. They only made it in as a wild card and were one and done.

Third, there's a huge difference between short-term success and building a perennial contender.

The reality is there's not just one way to build, but regardless of method you have to have smart people in charge.

We have Matt Rhule.

The Super Bowl is always a match-up of the best built team that avoids major injuries versus the team that caught lightning in a bottle.

And that's what we have again.

Now as to the Panthers, we're going to have to get a bottle ready if we want to make it soon, because we're neither well built nor resilient in this incarnation.

Matt Rhule is a difficult evaluation to me. And you add in fitter and it's hard to know who's is failing who. We say  he can't evaluate talent but they had all but identified Stafford as their number 1 target and had thermal signed and sealed before Stafford himself nixed it. After than it was going from plan b to c and so on. It's fair to say they failed to see slater potential as most did have him pegged as a guard/center as well.

My biggest grib with Rhule is not being able to evaluate where your own team is being aggressive giving up more draft capital for Gilmore(who can def still play) and henderson. You went all in and morgaged more of the future for a team picking in the top 10. That should get you fired. Not mentioning same himself...

True statement, but it's not that simple. There are a lot of other moving parts. We must have the cap space, the FO building towards a plan, the coaching staff being able to execute that plan and utilizing players to their strengths for starters...

Yep, cap space was one of the problems we were having at the time we brought Gettleman in. The first coming of Hurney had left us in absolute cap hell. We couldn't really do much in FA until that was cleared up. Now as to why he paid Matt Kalil so much *shrugs* beats the hell out of me.

lol who cares

the buccaneers won a super bowl, the rams are now in one, the saints have been one of the league’s premiere teams for a decade, and the patriots who archetyped this model are a dynasty

imaginary “pain on the back end” that may someday come isn’t important, the big scary monster that may or may not be around the corner is not a reason to not chase success

teams exist to win football games, not to have lots of cap space or make jimmy huddler’s offseason more interesting with lots of picks for his loser mock that nobody cares about
