A draft/trade question for my fellow Huddlers. Is a franchise QB worth (3) #1 draft choices?

I think in many instances, teams luck up on franchise QBs. And of course we know that teams miss every year. There's a whole lot of luck involved. That being the case, if a guy is a legit franchise QB, I think that three firsts are well worth it in most situations. It's a good 10-20 year investment depending upon the circumstances. The guy would have to be very smart though.

That's an even bigger problem if you trade away the resources that you were going to use to build.

The Niners are competitive now they made what they felt was an all in move with the next three to four years in mind. The Panthers can't even lose right. If we did we would already have had Burrow or Herbert in a Panthers uniform.

It has nothing to do with being "smart."  It is about being in the right position.  The Chiefs traded extra picks for Mahomes.  Texans traded extra picks for Watson.  Bills traded extra picks for Allen.  Rams traded for Stafford.  Bucs got lucky that Brady wanted to go there.  49ers traded picks for Jimmy.  They just traded picks for Lance.  

If you are in a position to grab your guy without trading anything (Chargers/Herbert), great.  But finding a QB isn't a smart team/bad team thing.  It really is mostly luck.  There are countless examples, as the one I just used, that show there are more than one way for "smart" teams to get a QB.  Sometimes you have to be aggressive.

In today's NFL, odds are if you want a QB, you either need to flame the hell out (Bengals, Jags) or be aggressive as hell (Rams, 49ers, Chiefs).  There is nothing wrong with trading picks for an elite QB.  They are that worth it.  Look at the Bengals last year vs this year, and Burrow ain't even close to his peak yet.

Depends on the QB, the cost and situation.

I wouldn't send 3 picks for a guy not on a rookie contract. It's too hard to lose the cap space and cheap players those picks could have been. 

2 first picks is reasonable, I loved Lance coming out but 3 was too damn much. 

As for the situation, when I see trades like that and think about what we have going on here and that is a fug no for me. This is the kind of move I do not want to see from people on hot seats, 1st year HCs/GMs or organizations with dysfunction issues. We got 2 of those and the third could be debated so not here, not now.

It’s a reason why you should always consider a QB when you have a high draft pick. It’s very pricey to move up and get one now. Once you have one you can trade back/acquire picks to build around him. We would be in much better shape if we had selected Fields and not extended Darnold. Sign a solid OL in FA ($18.5 million saved from Sam), draft a stud LT at 6 and suddenly we have a young QB with BC, 1st rounder, FA, Moton, and Brown to work with on the OL.

There's no more "right position" than being in a place to take the first quarterback overall.

Yet teams that have been in that place have taken guys like JaMarcus Russell, David Carr and Tim Couch among others.

Those examples would make me think that being smart is...well, kind of important.

I would say that being smart and lucky are both integral.  I remember all the talk about teams tanking for Tua before his last college season.  No one had heard of that guy Joe Burrow.  The Bengals were smart enough to take him, and lucky that he decided to transfer to LSU so people could see what he had.  Meanwhile, the Dolphins ended up getting Tua, and I am not sure they were either lucky or smart.

The 49ers didn't trade 3 first round picks to get Lance. They traded 2 (2022 and 2023) firsts along with their 2022 3rd to move from 12th to 3rd in the 2021 draft.

Given that they chose Tua over Justin Herbert, I'm gonna say the "smart" part probably doesn't apply.

If it’s a guy who can flat out play a la Joe Burrow, Mahomes, Herbert, etc. then of course it’s worth 3 first rounders.  The Bengals sucked ass without Burrow and now look at them. They listened to the input of their franchise QB, got a weapon he had a lot of faith in, and now they’re in the divisional round.  This is with Zac Taylor, who many thought was in over his head and a terrible coach.  
 

The Rams have been sacrificing first rounders for years and still haven’t had a losing record under McVay
