What Happens If We Strike Out on a Legit OC Hire?

So by now we've read, and seen the ''reports'' that Tepper supposedly wants a ''rockstar'' OC hire.

My question as the title references...what happens if Rhule fails to hire said ''rockstar''?

What will Tepper do then?

As a fan this is my team, bad coach, roster etc.; however that can't be said for a marquee OC that is ''already established''

So as an OC candidate you come into a Panthers team that is 10-23 in two years, for what is shaping up to be a final season for Rhule and then you're right back on the market with little to show for it on your resume'.

Why would any established OC put themselves in this position?

You would inherit Darnold, and an OL that can be described at best as ''in flux'', the main guys under contract are:

LT - Erving / Christensen

LG - TBD

C - Elflien

RG - Brown

RT - Moton

Note - Paradis (ACL), Miller, Scott, and Jordan I believe are all expiring contracts*

That is just not a very enticing core aspect of the offense to bet on yourself to work with, I would not be surprised if we didn't get anyone of notoriety at OC. Hopefully that is enough to prompt a firing for a guy in Rhule who can't put together an NFL level staff, and has to rely on his prior staff members from college.

I’m also curious to see what happens if we don’t see any significant progress this week. My blind/unrealistic hope is that at that point Tepper will pull the plug. He’s giving Rhule one final chance to save himself. Unrealistic? Yeah, but until I hear Tepper speak there is a chance.

It is yet not too late for HC interviews, but next week it is starting to be.

Money talks. If the money is good  and guaranteed its easy money to whoever takes it.  Ask yourself this, would you take a few million of guaranteed money to work half a year and then be right back where you are now which is unemployed? I know I would.

It’s a good argument.  Someone will jump at the chance.  That’s a guarantee.

The good ones get the offers they want.  This job at this time can’t be high on anyones list.

This is partly what I'm alluding to, why would O'Brien leave ALA knowing he could be looking at HC offers inside a year.

Jay Gruden IMO makes no sense, Pep would be nice, but I don't want to subject the brother to Rhule. I don't want the Vikings guy, or a guy, that knew a guy from PHI.

Could this be the wake up call Tepper needs though? When Rhule comes asking for elite OC money for some trash candidate, probably his buddy Nixon?

I can only hope so.

Depends on what Tepper is willing to pay.

The guys at that level also have egos the size of Manhattan.  If the money is right, starting with Darnold would probably not deter them.  That would probably be seen as "a challenge."  The OL might get them thinking, but probably not enough to get them to say no.

Understand, I don't think our OL performance can be schemed around forever.

If we don't find somebody Tepper thinks is a marquee enough OC, or worse, they trot out a few guys that pet sit Rhule's dogs over the years, then things could get interesting.  But then again, one of Rhule's former dog sitters might be an improvement as an OC.

I just want to wake up to ''Breaking News'' Panthers fire Matt Rhule.

Even if late to the HC hiring game, we can't do worse...

Hue Jackson is out there somewhere. We probably could do worse, but damn it’ll be challenging.  Rhule’s bottom of the barrel.  I’m surprised I haven’t heard Hackett’s name much.  If Green Bay somehow keeps him after this year and we finally get rid of Rhule next season, ohh wee mayne.  That would make it worthwhile

That's the whole problem with Tepper's hiring process. He has always gone after and chased "hyped or rock star coaches." Rhule had a lot of hype as an up and coming college coach who was going to make it big in the NFL, he threw a lot of money and gave a big contract only for that to bust. Joe Brady was supposed to be the next offensive guru genius because of LSU, gave him big money and a first time opportunity as OC = BUST. Tepper needs to really look at the foundation and stop going after the hype! No rock star OC is going to save the Panthers, we are fundamentally built wrong from the top down!
