Rizzuti sums up goal line decision on point

Carrol lost a SB by not giving it to the right guy but his guy. Rhule is so obvious and it was a sad attempt to prop up Sam as 'good enough'. They both do the same things turned out to not be true, as all of us with brains knew.

They don't care. Their view, and rightly so, is that panthers fans will overlook everything if we start winning.

Well, they are right in that regard.  I mean when we went 3-0, there was more interest.  Of course it was a mirage, and they actually have to start winning games later in the year, which doesn't look likely anytime soon.

Let this sink in. In Rhules post game press conference, he was ask about the decision to leave Sam in and have him QB sneak on the goal line 4th and inches play. He said both guys can do it. He said if it was a 1 yard play, Cam would have been the call but it was just inches so he assumed Sam could get the push. And Sam did, but as usual nobody saw Sams success but Rhule. Think about his reasoning: if the play required a full yard, Cam is the guy to get it done. So, if only inches are required on a critical play wouldn’t you put Cam in the game just to make sure of success. Or, do you make a selfish point (example; Pete Carrol / Marshawn Lynch) and give your personal favorite player an opportunity for glory? Total failure. Matt Rhule is full of poo! He can never say “I make decisions that are in the best interest of the TEAM”

Personally, Panthers Wire is one of my favorites for a few reasons when it comes to their analysis, least of which was the fact that they weren't too hot on Darnold last winter (due to his body of work and potential price), and in fact said that if we were going to try somebody new that it should be Gardner Minshew. Now, Anthony Rizzuti has added a little food for thought on Rhule's decision to use Darnold on 4th and inches.

I was only thinking about the decision in terms of how idiotic it was from a purely football perspective (which Rizzuti got at), and how it reflects Rhule's bad judgement and apparent inability to put the best players situationally in the best position to succeed. But Rizzuti also mentioned how Rhule blew perhaps a last opportunity for Cam and Panthers fans.

"You’d also think, at a time where his popularity is at an all-time low, that he’d throw the fans a bone and give them one final Cam Newton moment. The Carolina faithful, particularly throughout the course of Newton’s comeback, have grown to appreciate their franchise’s greatest player more than they ever had.

"If that was indeed his final day suiting up in the black and blue, wouldn’t you want your fans to have that lasting image? What are you trying to prove in keeping with Darnold in such a high-risk, low-reward choice?

"Sadly, Rhule may have been trying to prove he’s been right on his choice of quarterback when he’s been absolutely wrong. His and the staff’s continued stubbornness not only cost Newton at least a slither of a dignified sendoff, but it also potentially cost his team a chance at winning and you—the fans—of a beautiful memory in what has otherwise been a hideous season."

I hadn't thought of that, but I believe Rizzuti is absolutely right. Cam will never say it, but Rhule dogged out Cam in Charlotte by not allowing him to come in deep in the red zone, and he dogged Cam out in Tampa by not calling his number at the damned goal line. And by robbing Cam, Rhule also robbed Panthers fans of those moments. And Coach Clueless really didn't have anything to lose by putting Cam in. I mean, he obviously wasn't going to lose his job win or lose. He may have believed he was saving face by letting Darnold get the score (which Sammy didn't), but what Rhule has only achieved is to lose whatever pocket lint's worth of credibility that he had with some Panthers fans. It's just a prime example of his misunderstanding of the bigger picture, and a lack of appreciation for the part that Newton has played in the franchise's history (if not NFL history). And the same either directly or indirectly is a reflection of David Tepper's tone deafness or maybe even indifference to faithful fans.

Rhule definitely has ego problems.

When you coach it's not supposed to be about you.

It's about your guys and giving them the tools they need to succeed.

He shtted all over Cam. He deserves to be fired for being so damn selfish and f'n clueless. THAT'S why he'll NEVER succeed in the NFL and Tepper looks like more of a fool every day.

Then Rhule proceeds to praise Cam in his presser yesterday. "Cam's a leader....he's the veteran voice the team needed...I hope he's back next year...blah blah blah". What a liar. If he REALLY thought Cam was worthy of praise, he would've used Cam where he still shines: short yardage situations. Cam looks not much better than Sam when throwing the ball (though the terrible OL makes it tough to really judge either of them), but running the ball? Particularly when you need some power? Cam is absolutely the choice here, and I'd wager he's the choice in this situation versus any QB in the League, even now. Don't lie to the Panthers faithful, Coach. We are not that dumb.

Right there!

Rhule is either out there making decisions based on non-football considerations, or just willy nilly. Either way is not befitting of a head coach in the NFL.

Cam will be in the panthers ring of honor one day. He has all the accolades at an NFL level. Rhule will go down as the worst (in my memory) head coach in panthers history. Darnold will also go down as one of the worst QBs to ever suit up for the panthers. Heck, at this point I appreciate Jimmy Clausen even more.

Cam should start at reasonable price so Sam can be the high priced backup.

After seeing Cam throw (just that alone, not anything his butterfinger WR have caught or dropped) the "arm" was obviously still there. Very tight spirals. What was missing was timing with his receivers and obviously drops.

It's put up or shut up time for Fhule, Cam would actually help him bridge the time between "rebuild" and success. He could have had earlier success instead he gutted the engine instead of just tuning the suspension.

Regardless of how anybody feels about Cam Newton personally, he sells tickets and bring eyes and attention for good or for worse. NOW people can finally see why Cams rookie response to a question was "to be an icon and entertainer" he's definitely an icon who belongs in his Panther uniform but he's underappreciated as an entertainer.

People would just rather watch Cam. It's that simple.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
