Good article from Gantt concerning the team's status...

I can appreciate the season, I can appreciate what Fox has done for this team, and I love the Panthers. Been to every home game the past five seasons. But I can also be critical of my team because it's my right and I can only be ultimately pleased if we make the post season...which we have. So this season is another wonderful one. The last two? Not so much. Gannt didn't write this last season now did he?

I do think that this was a great article. Panthers are still strong and can play big time ball with anyone.

Remember we were only a gust of wind away from calling that game on sunday night a win. that's all....just one gust of wind and we would be hearing everyone talk about the panthers being legit contenders for the superbowl.

not a bad thing to realize.

Speculation of Peppers:

I think he just didn't want to sign a huge deal after having only 2 sacks last year. I think he wanted to have this whole year done, prove that last year was an abhorreation (sp?). He doesn't want the team or himself criticized that he did not deserve the record deal. So I think he is waiting for the end of the year and then will sign.

It's aberration. I can only think that abhorreation is a cross between a mirage, bad dream, and bad case of hemorrhoids.

Here were my questions at the beginning of the season, along with answers.

Would Peppers bounce back? He has and opposing OCs need to game plan around him.

Could we start to win at home again? 8-0

Would Ryan Kalil turn out to be a top quality center? Yes.

Would Jake come back from surgery? He's still a game manager and not a guy with a John Elway arm but he gets the job done and can run the entire play book.

Could we start to run the ball and get two yards when we need two yards? Yes.

Would the absence of Kris Jenkins be a problem? It's been good for the locker room but we have not replaced talent with talent. And it shows.

Would Jon Beason be a solid Mike LB? He's starting to look like one of the best in the NFL.

Would the Otah deal be a good one? It's looking like we got the better of that one, something I did not think would happen.

Who would get the better of the Jenkins/Jets deal? Jury is still out on that one but I like Godfrey and Barnidge is useful on special teams.

Would 87 make a difference and would a reliable third receiver emerge? Yes to the first part and jury is still out on the second although Rosario, King, and 80 have showed flashes. You have to remember that Fox only wants Jake to throw the ball about 20 times a game so there aren't many opportunities for third receivers in Charlotte. If you're a third receiver, your job is to block.

Would Stewart be worth a #1 pick. So far, he looks good and has a bright future.

Would special teams start to look like a solid unit? They have been much better in the second part of the season.

With a better offensive line and a healthy quarterback, would Jeff Davidson prove to be a good selection? Right now, our D can give up points. Thankfully, we can keep up and go toe to toe with any D in this league.

So, for the most part, Fox and Hurney have come up with the right answers and we should be happy that we have a good head coach/GM tandem. Many owners right now are staring at empty seats, a losing record, a big salary cap problem and the inevitability of firing a coach and handing that coach a big contract cancellation check.

However, the loss of the big body in the middle of the defensive line is a worry and we did not replace Kris Jenkins. And, at times, key times, it shows.

In the off season, we have a lot of free agents to sign, some more vital than others and we will not have a first round draft pick. If we can somehow sign Peppers and Gross and find a seriously good defensive lineman in the draft or through free agency, we will remain competitive in a tough division and be a team that can compete for a world championship.

Compare what's happening here to what's happening in Detroit, Cleveland, Seattle, SF, Oakland, KC, Jacksonville, etc. etc. and we're in good shape.

My final question before the season began: would I be able to keep my posts shorter than War and Peace?

NO!

Aberration.
