Does anyone have an I Touch?

I have a son that is asking for an I Touch. He is not interested in the phone, but the internet, reading books, etc. on this thing. I do not know much about them except they cost 200 plus dollars. Are they worth the money? I also have heard that Apple charges for each update and application you use. Any help would be appreciated.

Apps do cost money, you can only get the internet at wireless hotspots, it's basically the iphone minus the ability to make calls. Personally I'd rather have a cheap netbook for internet browsing etc but it all depends on what he wants it for.

My son has one and uses it all the time. Not sure exactly what he is using it for, but he is using it. Also uses it as an Ipod at the gym. I don't think he purchases many apps though.

My wife got one about a month ago and loves it. Plays games, music, videos and she uses it as an organizer/calendar. It also checks email and the web via WiFi.

The iTouch is great. But it is only Wi-Fi enable.

My wife has one never used it and gave it to my daughter. She uses it to play on you tube all day.

There are plenty of fun apps available that are free to download. I have had it since it came out and I love it. The newest update does cost $5 but you are not required to download it, but all the previous updates were free. I would definitely recommend it, it is very convenient.

It has lots of good learning games for younger kids too

Love my iTouch. I use it mostly for music and video, but some of the apps/games are pretty cool. Just know that if I got too involved in using the apps I could easily spend like 50 bucks downloading stuff I don't really want or need.

He would like to have the GPS function. Is that something already installed or is it something you have to have a service for, like TomTom?

The iPod Touch, however, is a great device. You might look for a refurb one or one from the last generation to save money.
