Why you don't fire John Fox

Matt Foley

I've seen some of the Warren Sapp interviews about that and from the way he puts it, in so many words, that organization totally changed when Dungy got there. They became a team he said. If he had stayed, I believe they would have still done really well.

I'm not so sure.

Sometimes you get to the point in a coaching situation where coach and team have taken each other as far as they can go. When that happens, both sides need change, and it can be mutually beneficial.

I think we may be at a similar point.

John Fox should be fired for extending a sorry QB, trading next years 1st round pick, and his continual inability to see that DeAngelo Williams is now the best offensive player on our team. Now, I know that Hurney was also in on the first two, and that's why he should go as well.

Those three reasons alone should be enough to get the man canned but you can also add in that he's never had back to back winning seasons.

They were either 0-5 or 0-6 after that 59-0 debacle at New England, and everyone said "he's lost the team, he needs to go." Now they are playing like the team that went 13-3 last year, and things look bright for next year.

Fox is a top 10 coach. If you're dumb enough to run him off, you get what you deserve.

I agree.

We need a new quarterback, not a new coach.

LMAO

You want Smith gone, but Fox to stay

I don't care one way or the other. I'm just stating what I would do, and I bet you I'll be right when this season is over.

The Panthers screwed up in their handling of Peppers. In doing that, they got Smith's nose bent out of whack. Now they have two aging superstars who are producing but are not happy being there. I expect one or both to be gone this next offseason.

LOL. Sorry, top 10 coaches actually get back-to-back winning seasons. Last years team would have been 8-8 or 9-7 if we didn't play the Raiders, Lions, Chiefs, and any other terrible team on our schedule.

Yeah, we played like a 7-9 team in the playoffs after being a 10 point favorite. Just seems like over the past few years we are never ready or never up to the 'big game'.

It's a valid discussion, but the name that always comes up in my mind is Tony Dungy.

Suppose the Bucs had stuck with Dungy? Would he have won there? Or was a change the catalyst that was needed to get both the Bucs and Dungy to their respective Super Bowls?

The same situation could happen here, though if it does I hope we pick a better successor than Tampa did. After that one year, Gruden was generally the picture of mediocrity.

i agree with all of this.

i also think that the comparison of fox to fisher is very accurate. both are overrated as is their records.

they might find success in another situation but i wouldn't care. they have reached their peak years ago and are unable to bring about consistently winning seasons, regardless of how much they are considered a "top ten" coach.

btw...what makes someone a "top ten" coach? someone who has been in their job more than 2 years and has managed to keep from getting fired?

fox won't get a HC job when he leaves this one. there are too few HC jobs going to retreads and there are several who are better candidates than fox already on the market and there will be more after this year joining that crowded market. truth is, most teams are giving HC jobs to people who have not been HCs on the pro level these days.

agreed. The samething is happening to the saints this year. Saints last year had a hard schedule and went below .500. this year the saints has one of the easiest schedules in the league. now they are 9-0. Not a big surprise. Panthers this year one of the hardest schedule in the league. Now we will be lucky to make .500 before the end of the season. Then next year we will get easy schedule again and then go above 500.

The schedule doesn't work that way anymore. Essentially, teams play the same schedule, save two games against the same place finishers in NFC divisions that are not on the rotation.

What it all boils down to for me is:

Can Fox lead this team to another Superbowl?

Taking into account the way he calls games and his philosophy and his track record in the last 5 years, my answer is no.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what this thing is all about?

Fox proved his mettle after the 0-3 start this season. Again. He proves it every year. You have a bunch of people on here who forget your odds of going to the Super Bowl are 1 out of 16 and odds of winning it are 1 out of 32. Furthermore, the odds of going to the championship games are 1 out 8. In eight years, Fox has been twice. Odds of making the playoffs...three out of eight or .375. Fox has been three times in eight years. Barely missed every other year. Hasn't had that stinker year that makes fans give up on the team. But...because of that....hasn't had the top 10 picks that get you over the hump, either.
