There is zero incentive to cut him before then.  On IR he isn't' taking up a roster spot.  Once the offseason starts the rosters go to 90 so the spot isn't that important. 

Lets be honest, there are 5-10 guys on every 90 man roster that everyone knows have close to zero chances of making it.  Also you usually have extra QBs just to make sure you have enough arms to run drills.

I'm not saying that is what they should do, but it could see them reasoning it out they way.

 

Yeah, there is no reason to cut him until him being on the roster is knocking someone off. If we don't have a 3rd QB, we could even kerp him for that.

What happens if we stick him on the practice squad? No roster space but the only question is if someone signed him would they be responsible for his salary or would we?

He doesn't belong as a starter, he gets rattled when the game is planned to exploit his weaknesses, he's had some injuries but nothing that knocks him out of the league. That pretty much sums up the second string QB on most teams. 

We're paying him already next season, no way around that. We can't realistically trade him without basically giving up more draft picks on top of the ones he's already cost us. Might as well let him ride the pine and be able to make use of him in a pinch while he hopefully gets better at film study and quits seeing ghosts.

We may have to find a good starter next season, we sure don't want to have to look for a back-up as well while paying someone big bucks to sit at home.

The problem is there isn't a backup QB in the NFL that has the issue seeing the field like he does. So that actually makes him what you don't want as a backup QB.

Cutting Sam and then signing a guy will result in even less cap space just to get a comparable level of player. Of note, PJ is an RFA after this season; I have no idea what he will cost.

I'm onboard with paying the $18M or extending Sam to a backup level contract. If Sam thinks he is still a starter let him seek a trade. Much like Teddy he'll be much more willing to renegotiate his contract to facilitate a trade.

I don't think PJ will or should be retained. Let him roam.  If we need him after training camp, his price might be reasonable. If not, perhaps he'll catch on somewhere else.

And all back ups have issues of one sort or another. We know Sam's. We might be able to fix them in time or can at least plan around them.

You can certainly make a case for that, but I think that more than anything else the issue comes to the forefront when he is under pressure or perceives pressure is imminent. How do you train him to become bombproof?

It’s the opposite he actually does worse in clean pockets.

He has zero future here. Bringing him back on a 'he can improve 2.0' would cause a riot, with at least the fans and I don't think the players were far behind. He is done here. He can't even be trusted to be a backup.

Cut him or trade him and eat most of that options is about it for us.

It's a narrative that gets pushed but it is also completely untrue. His clean pocket stats are as bad or worse than his under pressure stats. Pressure isn't the big problem, his ability to understand and react to what he is seeing on the field is.

That is why he isn't good backup material.

Not really. Regardless of what happens with Cam there is nothing wrong with discussing how we can get out of Darnold’s terrible contract.
 

Sam being an awful QB and having a laughable cap hit next year has nothing to do with whether or not Cam is here.

You're right, but Fitterer and Rhule signed on for next season, too with $18.8 million that isn't going away, so we better be about finding a fix.

He’s been that way before he was “shell shocked” dude just doesn’t have the brains/processing for the position.
