First Take - Cam is a Box Office Move

Do they not know that the Panthers have PSL's and are sold out every game? The ticket revenue is in hand so no, this isn't about tickets. This is about capitalizing on having a Top 5 defense, Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore, Anderson, our right tackle, etc. It's about having an ROI measured in wins. If Tepper wanted a losing team, he wouldn't be paying guys. 

Sure, they may pocket some cash from jersey sales but it's miniscule compared to what they pocket by WINNING.

Cam was brought here to win and Stephen A. Smith is a tool on this topic. I like him, I like his show, but he seems to firmly believe in what he is saying here and it's beyond idiotic.

Yeah but didn't we have an issue with away team's fans taking over our stadium. Mostly because our fans "weren't interested" I think that's what they could've been referring to. But i didn't watch so

I'm not sure how you look at our QB room and come to any conclusion other than "Cam Newton is the best QB currently on our roster".  That's all you really need to know.  You brought in a guy who was better than what you had.

they arent wrong about the box office effect at least though. Theres a reason tickets for sunday in the 500 level are selling for $200 a piece now when they were $20 two weeks ago, and I can tell you the return of RiverRaft Ron isnt the reason

TV revenue contracts are done for years in advance. Ticket sales are not going to change, thanks to PSLs and, as the OP states, there's no real "box office" advantage to signing Cam Newton. All the coin has been accounted for and every owner knows what their cut is at this point.

The signing, if you take the time to read the terms, is a half-season rental the Panthers, thanks to their cap space, were able to afford. If it doesn't work out, the roster bonus isn't paid and he's released before March 1, free to look for employment elsewhere. 

The Panthers are in a no-lose situation. It endears their fan base a little more, maybe brings back a few hold-out fans and will even have some fans believing a return to the playoffs is inevitable.

That's resale. The team already made their money off the tickets. Just because some scalper can sell his game day tickets for twice as much now as they were worth last week doesn't do anything for the team's revenues.

Best info I can find is ~61,000/62,000 seats are accounted for by ~23,000 PSL "accounts".

The stadium holds 74,867...lately the team has stopped announcing "sellouts".  Given the effects of covid that makes sense.

If the 61,500 number is accurate it is true that 82.1% of ticket revenue has been collected/accounted-for through the PSL program.

PSL's do trade on the secondary market and right now there are 621 PSL listing accounting for 1,570 seats on the Panthers Marketplace website.  This is down from a peak of 648/1,646 the day before Cam was signed.

There was a narrative out there that holders/owners were relinquishing their PSL's "in droves"...the numbers do not support this case.  

In 2014 Axios reported there were 1,700 PSL-linked seats available (about the same as now) and that number ballooned to 2,300 in 2015 when the team was thriving.

There will always be some PSL turnover as a results of life-changes, etc...

...but there's nothing to indicate poor team performance leads holders/owners to relinquish PSL's "in droves" --- in fact it appears to be just the opposite, when the team is doing well and PSL prices are up is when more PSL-linked seats become available.

You right. Sorry still drunk AF after yesterday. Got my tickets expecting to watch Chandler Jones put Sam Darnold in the hospital and within 10 minutes got to see 2 Cam TDs. Have a torn labrum Ive been dealing with and definitely made it worse jumping up after the 1st TD but definitely worth it
