Scott Fiterer - mid season grade

I said the other day his grade should be a solid C, but after sleeping on it this dude has failed in just about every aspect of his job..

Cons:

Bid against ourselves and paid a kings ransom for Sam Darnold

Pick up his 5th year option unnecessarily therefor tying us with him for 2 years

Extending Robbie Anderson.  I mean wtf was that?

Being cute in the draft and not addressing our main needs (QB, line) and letting talent slip by for a wr that we didnt need

Signing Erving and Elflein on day 1 hour 1 of free agency

Trading Perriman

Giving up more draft capital for a corner that is rumored to hate football and has played limited snaps and trading Darnolds safety valve in the process

 

Pros:

Gilmore for a 6th is great but then again we have to sign him and I imagine its going to be an expensive 3 year deal

Signing Reddick albeit to a one year prove it deal

Signed Daquan Jones

 

I am probably missing some stuff on both sides but damn the bloom is most certainly off this rose.  People on here were kissing his ass after the draft and I told people patience.  Sure he is better then hurney but the darnold albatross is going to pull this franchise down for 2 solid years

Don't forget Fox and AJ Bouye who have played well.

Tremble and Nixon look like good pickups.

The BC and Brown draft picks make his OL efforts look even worse.

OL - to be objective we should look at what OTs and OGs were available (I don’t actually know) in free agency. Last time I saw an attempted stats focused review of all free agents it showed that everyone was about as bad as each other. Turns out no one lets above average OL hit free agency.

QB - He tried to secure Stafford and Watson, unsure if he was in the mix for other trades for QBs. He couldn’t convince them to join us which is a failing of the team, not him yet. The QBs available in the draft would not be helping us this year. So his failing was Bridgewater to Darnold… which turns out was a big mistake rather than a lower risk trade such as Minshew.

WR - impossible to accurately evaluate Robbie IMO, there’s too much crap going round. 

Kicker - at the time was awful seeing people in and out in a conveyor belt but looks like we’ve got an upgrade albeit for this season.

CJ & Gilmore - Unnecessary to do both, should have pushed for Gilmore before trading for CJ. CJ definitely was a reaction to our standing plus Horn, but our CBS have managed OK with him.

So the main issues for me are moving on from Bridgewater to Darnold and the CJ trade, the rest is a wash

The issue really are his dramatic failures on QB and the OL. The draft hasn't looked great this year but we are also talking about half a season into young players careers. Also, his trades for Henderson and Gilmore make the selection of Horn look bad. I realize that it is mostly perception but when you look at the OL and QB(both positions we could have upgraded), it does hurt the argument for CB in hindsight.

Now, all that said.....this is 99% Rhule's fault. The buck stops with him on personnel, so he takes the blame.

I am not sure all transactions made by Fitterer were his decisions alone. I think we know Rhule has more or less been given final authority. I would love to know who had the final say on Darnold. I was hoping we would not regret passing on A couple of these young quarterbacks.

I'm actually pretty sure they aren't. It's been pretty abundantly clear since the initial presser announcing Rhule's hiring that he has final say on all football related decisions.

Yes, if anyone thinks the $65 million coach isn’t the Conductor of this mediocre symphony of putrid ness, they would be mistaken 

I heard his press conference yesterday and thought he was the most disingenuous coach I have ever heard in the Nfl 

Teflon Matt comes across as amiable and a chatty, honest good guy.  He isn’t 

he made serious personnel mistakes in staff and players and someone else will take the fall for him 

he has one problem  the fans see through him and not  buying  into him equals no Panthers fans in that stadium.     It is a matter of time before the players stop too

Way overrated and absolutely replaceable. His professionalism doesn't make up for his atrocious moves on the offensive side. Already gave up too many picks this year for duds.

Rhule has final roster decisions. My ultimate guess is that Rhule is largely the architect during the offseason, when he has time to deal with player evaluations. Fitterer is largely responsible for the mid-season moves, where Rhule is consumed by trying to finish "How to be an NFL Coach for Dummies" during the week.
