Is Silver Platter Sam a viable backup QB for Panthers over the long term?

So, how is that even a remotely good comparison? 

It's called  Desperate hope on my birthday But looking at this  way. 

Sam has arm talent and legs.

As a backup he doesn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders so he relaxes when he comes in and we have little drop off.

 

That would be worth a 2nd round pick wouldn't it? If hypothetically he could become a 15yr DA for us?

That is not even close to worth a second round pick. 

Nor is Darnold anything close to DA.

Its guaranteed salary so it is tradable.

Only way somebody trades for it is we were to attach an asset to it, NBA style.

What would that take?  A first would probably do it.  A second?  maybe.  A third? I doubt it.

Maybe you attach a player to it, one of these corners we have? Sam and CMC and you get a some picks back? 

I think the most likely outcome is he is on our roster at the beginning of the year.  Either we sign a vet and he is the backup or we draft a guy and he starts as the starter and if he struggles it will be easy for them to transition to the rookie.

In reality the best scenario for the team would be for us to draft a guy, let him sit for a year, and Darnold to play good enough to at least get resigned by another team at the end of this contract and get us some type of comp pick.  Or Darnold plays so bad we get a high draft pick to draft OL to help said rookie that we drafted the year before.

Nope, since 2018 it's fully guaranteed the minute you pick it up. What a horrible sequence of events. Trade Teddy on Wednesday, pass on Fields on Thursday, and pick up Sams 5th year option on Friday with PJ and Grier as his "competition". Yikes

He is/was a rehabilitation project. You don't rehabilitate someone by plucking them out of a bad situation and then dropping them into an almost identical situation. A rehabilitation probably had more of a shot if Sam had been able to hold a clipboard for a season or two, and not be thrown right back into the fire. It's obvious a lot of his problems are mental, and he needs more work on his mechanics/footwork. Those are things you don't want to fix in-game, during the season as a starting QB. In his current state, he's not a starting QB nor is he backup quality. I hope the coaching staff can salvage him as a backup. Stranger things have happened.

No. A backup QB is suppose either be a promosing future talent or a conistent vet that can come in and do all the basics and fundmentals for you.  Same fits none of the qualifications.

Yeah, when it comes to rehabbing a QB with Sam's issues, the Panthers have to be the worst case scenario.  He needed to sit behind a vet for at least a year before seeing any gameday action and even then only behind a decent O line w/an experienced OC feeding him the plays.

He has none of that here in Carolina.

What the hell was Rhule and company thinking?

He’s a good backup on a team with an established veteran starter. Maybe he goes to Kansas City or something.

If you can eat Teddy’s deal….you can eat Sam’s.  Sam being significantly worse and all.

Check the date of the article. 2017. Now it’s guaranteed no matter what. 
 

   The real problem with the team exercising it was there was no upside to it. At all. Best case he goes “Tannehill” and they sign him long-term. And his cap hit in the first year would probably be less than the 19M anyway. If Darnold was playing great right now, it still wouldn’t make any sense to have done it. Now, for the 2nd year in a row, they are going to be trying to get a team to pay 2-3M for Darnold to be their backup while the Panthers eat the rest. Just like Teddy.
