Is Silver Platter Sam a viable backup QB for Panthers over the long term?

I don't know if he should even be backup waterboy. The other team would be well hydrated while our guys died of thirst.

Backup? If he takes very little money I wouldn't hate it. Being a backup might be good for him. I think there is pretty much zero chance of it happening though, the team needs to move on from him.

Well, at least next year he will be our backup . . . at 18 million.  Hopefully that's the end.  What you want in a backup is a guy who will just run your offense, make the easy plays and not beat you.  Alex Smith.  Teddy Bridgewater.  Etc.

If there's anyway we can slip out of that 5th year option we need to do it. 

The play we're seeing lately isn't decent backup quality.

Honestly, no.

You don’t expect your backup to be able to carry you, otherwise he’d be the starter, but you do expect him to come in when called upon, not turn the ball over, and try to keep the ship afloat a few games. Darnold throws way too many turnovers for that. He’s either a starter or 3rd string project, and that project label is me being nice since this is year 4 for him. He’s proven to not be a starter in this league, so if I had to keep him, it would be as a 3rd/Practice Squad guy.

Yeah, he is so bad that 3rd string is likely where he slots right now. 

IMO, he will go to one more team as a backup and then be out of the NFL.

Not sure. I think the 5th year option may be guaranteed for injury only but I'm not certain on that.

No way out of it.  That is why it was asinine to give him the 5th.  Granted its only 18million but it guarantees that he is here in 2022 regardless of what happens.

One of the most important things a backup can do is "game manage" and do not turn the ball over.   Sam cannot do that.  He is not backup material.
