. My question is was there any warning signs of how bad Sam would play this year during training camp or the preseason?

Well he was the worst starting QB in the NFL….when we brought him in to be the guy.  Red flag one.

We know the Jets didn’t create most of his issues as he had crazy turnover problem in college.   Red flag two.

Reporters kept detailing it and asking Rhule about why Sam spent all camp largely just checking down.    Matt Rhule only played him in one preseason game and he largely checked down the entire half and did nothing until the final 2 minute drive.  And the throws on his only drive during the 2 minute drill were pretty short too.  Red flag 3.

I don't mind the Darnold move and getting a franchise QB is a crap shoot for all teams.  Darnold was cheap and many thought he was better than the other QBs in the draft other than Lawrence.  I do mind the back-up QB we have on our team.  This is unacceptable. Minshew should be on our roster.

I mean, Sam wasn’t cheap.  Trubisky was cheap.  Menshew was cheap.

Once there was enough film ( 2-3 games )  on Rhule/Brady/Darnold,,  it's been down hill. Not to mention the first 3 games were against , teams as bad as the Panthers.

If adjustments have been made ( doesn't appear to be any )  none were improvements.

Sure, CMC being injured didn't help.

Darnold  should be able to be a game manager.  But the play calling, numerous 3 and outs, indicate there isn't enough talent for him to be able to hand the ball off, throw a few slants, bubble screens to a running back who can catch , etc.  So he's not a good game manager. He Can't hit the slants, or out patterns ( that the defenses are sitting on )
Maybe with a decent O Line he could be a game manager.
But every team knows how to play us, him and can probably tell you what play is coming next.

But he doesn't appear to have much of a future anywhere as a starter.

Here's my warning signs:

The Panthers brought in Sam Darnold, in hopes to give him a second shot after coming from a Jets team that consistently failed to surround him with protection, and talent.

The Panthers responded by giving him no protection, and putting him in an offense that did little to take the pressure off of his shoulders by having an unimaginative run game, and a poor run pass balance.

Darnold may have been able to be saved, but not in our situation, and not doing what we do.
