Were there signs??

Even if we ignore the Jets years...

I stated it over and over again in the preseason, the fact Rhule wouldn't play him and the 1st string offense was both a mistake and a sign that he knew they were going to struggle.  That was a huge red flag.

Now, if we are considering what he put on tape while with NY, it was an even bigger red flag than this preseason...  he sucked.  He does suck.  And he always will suck.  All the advanced stats affirm what is easily seen with our eyes.  He can't read a defense, pressure or no pressure.

Of course there were signs.

Sam Darnold came from a team with a sh!tty O-line, got pounded for a few years and was traded to a team with a sh!tty O-line and is getting pounded.

He spent a few years running for his life in NY, went south to Charlotte, where he spends most of his time on the field running for his life.

Just because he changed locales didn't necessarily mean things were going to be any better.

Aside from the lack of preseason snaps, there were signs even in the first three weeks that were dismissed because we were winning. The Jets game was more competitive than it should have been with Sam coming a hairs breath from throwing two interceptions. The absolute WTF interception/pitch in the Saints game that set up their only score. A much closer than it should have been game with the Texans with two Sam Darnold fumbles that Paradis jumped on.

I’d think there was reason to be optimistic that sam could be decent behind a good line. I don’t think there was reason to believe that we assembled a good line.

Ceteris e pluribis facto: Sam wasn’t going to workout. And neither will any other qb for that matter. Fix the lines then plug in the qb - not the other way around.

There sure was.  The first sign was Darnold struggled behind a bad OL with the Jets, then we bring him here and did next to nothing to fix our putrid OL.   Not only were there signs, but big, flashing, neon ones, but our staff put on blinders to block out them out because those signs were annoying.

it's almost like two owners, three gm's and two coaches think putting bigger names on the roster would generate more ticket sales. Well this bit them in the ass. Ten years, actually what 13? our last great offensive line was 2008 and that even included Jeff Otah and then he fell off. Can't rack up those numbers from that year without a great line. Play boring football, get nobodies like a ryan tannehill to make names for themselves.

I bet more butts in seats would be more appealing to Tepper than a top selling jersey for your star player.  Wait, if you win football games, more butts are in seats AND merchandise sells increase.  What a concept!

I don't mind the Darnold move and getting a franchise QB is a crap shoot for all teams.  Darnold was cheap and many thought he was better than the other QBs in the draft other than Lawrence.  I do mind the back-up QB we have on our team.  This is unacceptable. Minshew should be on our roster.

Serious A:  David Carr had a worse OLine.  I know, hard to believe, but that line his rookie year allowed nearly 5 sacks per game on only two thirds of the drop backs that we've given Darnold.

Very hard to believe. So Darnold would've been worst than he was with the Jets, but sure he's better with us yet...

My question is was there any warning signs of how bad Sam would play this year during training camp or the preseason?

Some people were claiming that he was the best panthers QB seen during training camp in many many many years.

Of course, those same people pretty much ignored all of Darnolds entire detailed playing history from college and the Jets and were just extra excited to finally have, you know, the “right” looking kind of QB in camp.
