CMC just got activated and Sam cleared the protocols.

You'd think since CMC has only played a handful of the 24 games with this coaching staff they would have adjusted a little better. For a rebuilding staff they sure like to bank on short term success with no backup plans when someone goes down

Yep. Either they don't think they're rebuilding or they just suck at doing so.

This staff seems to think we have the depth to just plug guys in with no fall-off. We do not.

Lol. They drafted a running back in the fourth round and wavered a power back from Denver. They did have a backup plan for CMC potentially missing time. Matter of fact, it’s the one position you can say we absolutely prepared as if we knew CMC could get hurt.

And proceeded to run the ball like 15 times a game until the losses/media scorn forced them to actually use the backups. I didn't mean backup player plans I meant backup play calling plans

The problem is Rhule is looking for a shortcut.  He's trying to avoid the investment of a first round pick to solidify the QB spot. It is a mistake.  I get why they went with TB actually given the Brady connection, but they should really have just gone with their favorite QB at our spot, unless they were really sure none were going to be good.  Just feels like a mistake to neglect QB like this...

Which 1st round QB are you putting behind this Oline?

Jones would die. Fields would develop bad habits.

Darnold is no less talented than either - he was progressing nicely in those first three games before the hits started to add up. Going to a run-first offence is the only sensible solution to addressing our Oline problems this season and perhaps allows Darnold to still be salvageable.

One player especially a RB absents, should not make Donald play so poorly. He has a good group of WR and other players around him. He makes bad decision, not so accurate, and hang on to the ball to long, which has nothing to do with CMC being absent. I have questioned brady also but starting to think Donald is holding him back from opening up the play book more. Rule have stated having packages for Donald. This is why we see the same plays repeatedly called.

I don’t recall Rhule saying that and I listen to just about every press conference. I do recall a couple weeks ago Rhule saying the playbook was limited for protection concerns but not because of Sam.

Sam Darnold isn’t good at playing QB though. There is a long long long list of guys with better raw physical talent than Tom Brady and they can’t even occupy a practice squad spot.

The want of going to a run offense is because Sam isn’t a starting caliber QB.  That isn’t much of a debate anymore.

Mac Jones wouldn’t die.  He processes things quick and can get the ball out.   His physical tools give him a low ceiling.  But he already is a better QB than Sam.   That helps a OL.  Bad QBs like Sam make OLs worse.

All offseason they said they needed to make it so Darnold didn't have to do everything. Then when the OL struggled mightily and CMC went down Brady expected him to be Brees all of a sudden.

We would be 6-2 with a very average yet efficient QB.   Sam isn’t being asked to be Brees.  Sam can’t do basics which ends up putting more and more stress on the O (thus himself)

We would be 6-2 with freaking Teddy.

If Darnold's shoulder is just sore and bruised, he'll start.  If it's anything structural with the shoulder, I doubt he plays.  He seems like a pretty tough dude that can play through pain.  It wouldn't be smart to let him play if there can be lingering or worsening damage to it though.

    • We could easily pick apart yesterday’s game: dropped passes, blown coverages, bad tackling and red zone issues to name a few. But it was clear that this wasn’t the same team from earlier in the season. They fought back and hung with the champs until the end. That’s what I was excited to see and it gives me hope that we’re on the right track.
    • I think BY played well today and exceeded expectations. I will temper future expectations as he has to string together many games of consistent quality. One game doesn’t convince me that he is a franchise QB or even a guy you want to stick with for another season. One game doesn’t erase all the negative play and limitations from the past couple of years. I hope he balls out and continues to get better but for me the verdict is still out   That said, I think he gave the team and fans hope yesterday which is a lot more than what we had when we woke up Sunday morning.
    • He was vastly improved today and we need to see more of Bryce the rest of the season to continue evaluate him in order to decide what the heck to do with him at the end of the season. He must play at least like this and improve more from here the rest of the season in order for me to keep him. No more 123 yard passing games and want to see at least this output weekly from him. If this is Bruce improving slowly over time then Canales is even better with developing QB's than I thought he was but still too early to tell and we need to see him the rest of the way as he has at very least earned back the starting gig moving forward.
