If you could rewind time…Would you have picked Mac Jones? (Article)

I hate these type of questions. But whatever.

We are not ready for a rookie QB. Our team is not ready to help them develop. The pats went out and bought a new team over the offseason and was ready to plunk one in. We are not.

We can 'David Carr' Bridgewater and Darnold because we are not long term committed to them. We cannot do that to a rookie QB that we intend to build around.

2022 - oline

2023 - QB

we need to stick to the plan.

What about drafting Mac…letting him sit for a year behind Darnold or Teddy, then let them walk and Mac starts next year after we have another offseason to build the line?

For the record I’m still happy we selected Horn. I think he will be a future all pro at his position. Just throwing these questions out for debate.

Nah, I still feel that Jones ceiling is Alex Smith. Good and will stick the league for 10+ years, but there is a reason why teams thought they could do better.

Here, I feel that Jones would be pre-Harbaugh Alex Smith.

Simple question….looking back, would you pick Jones at number 8 overall rather than Horn? It’s easier to say Mac now because Horn has been out for us, but remember he looked like an absolute monster before the foot injury and our defense completely changed when he went out. What would you do huddle gm’s?

Article: Matt Rhule and the rest of the Panthers’ coaching staff had a chance to get an up-close and personal look at quarterback Mac Jones during the Senior Bowl in January.

While Rhule came away impressed with the former Alabama passer, the Panthers elected to trade for quarterback Sam Darnold and select cornerback Jaycee Horn at No. 8 overall.

Now Rhule will coach against Jones in Sunday’s matchup between Carolina and New England. He told Patriots reporters on Thursday that Jones handled everything well at the Senior Bowl and it took about 10 minutes to see he could be successful at the highest level.

“To me, no matter where Mac ended up, I knew he was going to be a longtime pro, because he just has all the right qualities and all the right things that are essential to being a great player,” Rhule said, via Zack Cox of NESN. “That was evident to me from the very beginning.”

Rhule noted that he’d spent some time trying to recruit Jones while at Baylor. And when Rhule coached Jones in January, he saw solid traits.

“He’s just got juice,” Rhule said. “Spending time with him, you could tell he loves football. He just won the national championship game and he’s out there practicing with us.

“You could see how intelligent he was the first day. We put a lot of install in, a lot of words in, just to see if they could recite it, and you could see pretty quickly he had a feel for the game. He had some moxie, and he was really, really intelligent and accurate and could throw the deep ball at a high level.”

Jones has piloted the Patriots to a 4-4 record, completing 68 percent of his passes for 1,996 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions.

Darnold, who may not play this week with a concussion, has completed 60.8 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Hindsight is Hindsight.

And if they could do it all over again, they would've drafted FIELDS, not Mac Jones.

Mac Jones is a less talented Sam Darnold. They’re both system QBs. If Rhule and Brady couldn’t get much out of Bridgwater and Darnold, what makes you want those two guys to be the ones developing Mac Jones? I guarantee you guys that Bill Belichick would rather have Sam Darnold as his QB this season for a 2nd round than a rookie Mac Jones in the 1st round. It didn’t happen because the Jets were not that stupid to trade Darnold to Belichick inside their own division.

Sincerely. I dont see the Mac Jones appeal. Side by side:

We're both 4-4

Mac has 173 more yards 2 less interceptions, 2 less fumbles (total, not lost) and 3 less TDs than Darnold.

Hes only 9 months younger than Darnold too. While having a far better offensive line and the best coach of all time.

I understand its popular to pile on - I certainly want Sam to play better myself - but looking aside from emotions there aren't major differences or anything that stand out that Mac Jones will be anything higher than a mid tier QB in the NFL.

Can you win with one of those? Sure. Id probably still take the potential of a Fields or Lance over Mac.

I get the concept but at this point we dont have the luxury of drafting guys to purposefully let them sit. The only teams that are actually able to do that are teams that are already good.

If we did draft Mac he would have been starting already getting his face smashed in.

Its crazy to think about how young Sam is given how long hes has played already. Im still not completely ready to give us on him. Might be best to put him on ice the rest of the year and see what he can do next year when we have a better oline.

My patience is wearing thin but its hard to fault him totally given the ineptitude of our offensive line and coordinators.

I would like to see him with a full strength offense but the great QBs have overcome poor offensive line play and injuries to their stars before.

His time to prove he's the guy is running out.

I'm not sure if Mac is as risk adverse to throwing downfield as Alex Smith was though.  Smith was a better athlete though.
