Remember when Joe Brady said the Panthers would run the ball a lot more?

Yeah I remember when we played the #1 scoring offense in the league. And were up 15-14 at the half and kept them in check and then Darnold imploded and threw 2 picks and we unraveled.

By the time Darnold threw a pick in the 2nd half vs Dallas, our D had given up 14 points. Yes, 7 of those came on a short field after a missed fg, but that isn't the same thing as blaming a Darnold implosion for it... The D gave up 14 points vs the Cowboys while we had the lead to start the 3rd quarter.

Darnold's interceptions were crippling because they meant we couldn't claw back into it until late. But just wanted a correction. The D folded before Darnold did vs Dallas. The D is still FAR ahead of the offense.

You're absolutely wrong. He has the skills to be very good. He just needs some bulk. He looks like a college RB right now but after some bulk he will break tackles and be like CMC in the run game.

You just don’t know what your talking about his Pro Day we’re you usually have better times then at the combine his quickness and explosive drills were avg to above avg. not to mention he doesn’t have the elite vision . He can be a good back but that his his ceiling so wish all you want to it want change who he is.

What I'm saying is that if you think having an elite rb is necessary to winning in the NFL, then tell 1986 I said hello. Elite RB's are vastly overrated in the NFL as the difference between their production and a run of the mill back rarely tends to make the difference in winning. Outside of the TItans being built around Henry, name a current winning team built around an elite RB. Given what an elite RB costs, and the hard reality of the cap, RB is not where I would prefer to spend my team's precious salary cap space.

Yes, I am the fan who likes CMC just fine, but would happily trade him to acquire an elite QB. Tell me which combo you think has a better chance of winning a SB: Darnold and CMC, or Watson and Chubba Hubbard?

We do need to be better to win against the better teams in this league, but in 2021, it's far more critical to be better at positions crucial to the passing game, than the run game, hence Hubbard's play at RB will do for me, since I'm far more focused on getting our OL and QB situations fixed, and not at all concerned about your perceived need for elite RB play.

Darnold and CMC to win the SB but it doesn’t matter what you or I think because we’re not getting Watson.Titans are the best team in the AFC and they have a Elite back.Titans, Rams , Buccaneers, Saints , Raiders ,Bengals,Chiefs ,Bills , Browns , Cardinals , all have guess what not only better records and of course QBS,  but also better RBS then Hubbard. Your opinion that it’s far more critical to be better at the passing game is correct but that’s another reason Hubbard will never be elite that’s the worst part of his game and something that CMC is great at and it shows on the field because our passing game is head and shoulders better when he’s in the game. Who would you take CMC and Mac Jones  or Watson and Hubbard   Minus 3 future first round picks ?

I refuse to give up 3 future first rounders for almost anybody, but I fear Tepper will do it, despite everything I've told him at brunch. He doesn't listen to me anymore. Titans are the ONLY team whose offense is built around an elite back, yes they are good, but they are the exception, not the rule. I think you are looking at Hubbard's stat line and saying that was a poor day, without actually watching the game and seeing what he did on the field, under what conditions, and where there is room for improvement in his game. He's only a rookie, yet he's pretty obviously already superior to any rookie later round back we've ever drafted. When I have a QB that can make us competitive and an offense line that lets him do so with solid pass protection, then I *might* start to worry about whether our RB is good enough to put up stats that will make fantasy owners like him. But it's more likely I'd just work on our pass rush even more.

This seems fair.

Abdullah is a baller not sure why he's always been relegated to special teams and was let go by the Vikings. I kinda like the idea of splitting carries at RB, maybe CMC can work the slot more when he comes back or something to keep these guys on the field

that game plan today is only going to work against the worst of the worst though.

gonna need a plan B going forward when better teams load up and take away our average run game

We'll find out in a week. I enjoyed the win today, but I expect we'll see New England load up against the run big time regardless of who our starting QB is.

I have watched him and what I see is a avg. back and the stats back it up not just his but the offense as a whole when he is in their. The fact is the teams I listed have a better back then Hubbard but if CMC can stay healthy we have the elite back now we just got to find the QB and we could have picked Jones in this draft if our coaches wasn’t so concerned with building around the defense.

I know you’re gonna do this thing because you said something very dumb in the game day thread about this defense because you got emotional. This defense is elite. That offense we went up against is statistically better than the Bucs, rams, chiefs, ect. The #1 offense in the league. No defense is going to hold them. Darnolds two picks unraveled that game. Remember that 2013 Seattle historical defense? They gave up 34 points in a game to the colts offense that year. Sometimes elite defenses give up points. Doesn’t mean they aren’t elite. That’s why I call this fanbase insanely reactionary. They expect perfection or they aren’t that good.

we will see how they do against the top offenses but I’m expecting our offense to be so inept that it will fug over this elite defense. Also I don’t trust anyone’s opinion who says “Darnold was better than his stat line showed today.”

You may not realize this, but GameDay threads are for overreactions, lol.  As I said later, maybe they are elite with more pieces healthy and we will see that soon.

Here's the thing: our offense is bad. Period. Defense is not.

But if you want to talk about the Cowboys game, we have to acknowledge the D gave up 14 points before Darnold unraveled. It's disingenuous to act like *Darnolds second half interceptions* caused the defense to falter in that game... It was the defense breaking open that happened first.  That's ok tho. We can acknowledge Darnold sucks with acknowledging the reality the defense caved before he did.

Doesn't mean that one game will define them over the season, but my impression (and this has been without Shaq and Gilmore and imo they were huge yesterday) is the defense comes up soft in big moments from multiple games. I am happy I was wrong yesterday!

As to yesterday, Darnold did play better than his stat line... Better doesn't mean he would be adequate against better teams.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
