What a waste of a season, what a waste of a roster

We had other problems besides QB last night. I wish it were that simple, but it isn't.

It's pretty close to being that simple, QB is the most important position on the field and we don't have one.

Are the Colts really that much more talented than we are? Nope, but they have a QB... a good QB can fix allot of things overnight.

BUT BUT BUT

If we just bench Jake and Fire Fox and Fire Hurney it's all OK!

no! of course not. we should keep doing the exact same things were doing now!!! There is no possible way ANYONE ever will be a better coach than john fox , a better qb than jake or gm than hurney. 2003 forever!!!:cornut:

We don't change and we'll continue to flip flop seasons like we're doing. If we have a QB fall in our lap, we'll head to the Super Bowl (see: Steelers under Cowher)

We change and it's a little more likely we'll be worse than we'll be better.

There is no right answer here.

Pretty good summary here from British Panther...

The general thesis of the huddle is that Fox is too conservative and will make games unnecessarily close. This obviously results in an increase in the uncertainty of results and fluctuations in the W-L record from season to season even though the team doesn't necessarily get a lot better or worse.

My theory is different. In the NFL I see three types of team.

Firstly the no hopers that just don't have the all round talent to compete. These are rebuilding teams (e.g. Bucs, Rams, Chiefs) and the badly run teams (Browns, Bills, Raiders).

Secondly are the competitive teams which number about 20. They are generally well run and some years they win, others they don't. A majority of the league is so close that enough games come down to luck or a few big plays that the difference between 6-10 and 10-6 isn't all that great.

Third are the consistent winners. They probably have a great QB (Colts, Patriots) or an awesome defense (Steelers). They also have another advantage, a weak division. The Eagles and Giants would probably be consistent winners in the Colts and Patriots divisions.

The fact is that its damn hard to get 11+ wins a season unless you're going at least 4-2 in your division every year.

I estimate that if we were to hit the reset button then in 3 years we'd have a 1/6 chance

of being a consistent winner, a 1/6 chance of sucking and 2/3 chance of being about as good as we are now.

New coach? New coordinator? New players?

My belief is that you don't change regimes unless it's beyond repair under current leadership.

I'm about ready to believe we may be at that point.

(and I have no illusions about what that means; it's a tough road)

The coaches with no doubt lost this game. They made this game all about one player: Jake.

We have RBs getting 9 yards a run, and we are still throwing the ball. And worst of all, they didn't make any adjustments at halftime!

I don't care how good or bad any team's rush defense is, we need to run it and run it hard at everyone we play! DeAngelo gets 13 carries for 122 yards? Are you kidding me?

Now THAT is the kind of stuff that gets coaches fired.

It's obvious the coaching was sorry. Does that mean Jake wasn't sorry? No, he was. But who decides whether Jake being sorry is going to influence the game? Coaches. They've been hiding him and it's worked. Last week he looked ok and so they thought he was back. But when he showed signs of "Bad Jake" they should've adjusted and pulled back the reigns.

I don't blame them for coming into this game looking to put more on Jake and trying to get back where we need to be ( a run team, but with more balance). But our coaching staff is sorry making adjustments and that's what killed us last night. They sat there watching the car go off the cliff and never hit the brakes!

The defense was also not up to par .Some more blitzes would have been nice and really would have helped. Who determines that? Coaches! They have a rookie QB and a backup RB (although a good one) and a broke down OL. If we would have blitzed crazy, we would've killed them. That was obvious! Henne was rattled easy and yet we didn't take advantage of that.

Our defense not only has tackling issues, but angle issues. It'd be nice if they'd coach that up. Everybody says, "That's fixable." Hey, when we gonna fix it! We're 10 games into the season!

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
