That is hyperbole at it's finest. The only thing wrong with our offense is that OL and the QB. Not to mention that we technically have a top 10 defense, much like LA does.

Rams also have better coaching.

Also you’re not fixing that line or depleted defense with no picks.

It would literally be the blueprint for the 2020 4-12 Texans.

I am not against the idea of investing draft capital in a QB but we had that chance in 2021 and passed. We spent money in 2021 to try and protect Darnold but it was unwisely spent. So, what do you propose to do in 2022?

Fire Joe Brady and hopefully Pat Meyer. Move Elf to center and pick up another C in the later rounds. Try to get Corral or Willis in the 1st. Spend the excess money on FAs and a LB. Trade Shaq/Robbie for more depth or picks. Tag Jackson and trade or depth or picks as well.

One really important point here…Watsons cap figure is set to be 40 mil next season as it stands now.  He has the third highest contract in the NFL.  Risky move doesn’t quite say it

well if we get rid of our good defensive players, won’t have to worry about having cap for anyone lol

Yeah it is. I can tell some of you weren’t around when Hurney traded ours away. 1st round picks come in handy when you are building a franchise, each and every season.

If we traded our next 3 picks, we wouldn’t pick in the first round again until April/May 2025.

You were okay with trading 2 for a older Qb.. So now 1 more for a 9 year younger 1 is a problem.. huh??

The Rams definitely have better coaching.

You can fix the OL without 1st round draft picks. That's why our lack of investment in that area over the past 20 years is so fuging upsetting. You can get quality starters on the OL in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks. At one point I posted an article here in the Huddle about how an analysis of draft picks showed that the highest success rate for any position in the first three rounds was OL.

Now, you can also build through free agency, as well but that can get pretty expensive. Especially since the league is seeing a dearth of quality OL play.

How many first round picks are spent on QBs that weren't worth it?  There is a chance we spend 3 anyway... or more, or a combination more trying to find a franchise QB in a league where you HAVE to have one.   The numbers aren't great on "finding a first round QB" that pans out.  Not to mention the possibility of giving a QB 3-5 years and it doesn't work out.

Watson without these issues is an obviously YES.  A young, proven elite QB, is worth 3 1sts.... easy.  With these legal issues.... obviously a bigger risk but probably worth it still to not be in QB purgatory every year.

True…its not like 32 mill next year or 35 the next isn’t a big deal.  If he doesn’t play for whatever reason it really kills this franchise in a lot of ways.

There is more risk than just losing draft picks here

I like our chances of keeping 3 first rounders over the next 3 years.

We had #1 draft picks prior to 2003 and we were a middle of the road team until a journey man player emerged as our franchise QB and led us to the Superbowl.

We had #1 draft picks prior to 2010 and was the worst team in the NFL prior to drafting Cam. Moral of the story you need a QB to win in this league if you have a bonafide franchise guy you have a better chance than most at winning

can anyone name a FA olineman the Panthers have signed that’s played more than one average or above year? it would be zero years if it weren’t for Oher?

you’ll need a poo ton of picks to fix this oline not just one third and one second rounder the next few years after we get raped for a few firsts and a second

and that’s not considering the defense, the defense isn’t deep outside of CB, see how awful they play without Shaq? replacing them won’t be easy either

Deshaun watson without the legal issues..

So did you think trading for Stafford with 2 1st rounds was a mistake for the Rams??

That roster was one piece away. If anyone thinks this roster is remotely comparable, they know absolutely nothing and they should never post.

and WR’s and Coaching and Strength and Conditioning and RB’s. This a systemic problem. Don’t kid yourself. Come watch some canes games, we miss you in chat.

So you want to go from one subpar center to a worse center? That is Teddy to Darnold. Picking OL in the late rounds doesn't work unless you basically keep doing it over and over. After about the 4th round, the success rate drops dramatically, as does the chances of getting a starting quality player. That's part of the reason we are in the mess currently. The Panthers have historically not invested high draft picks in OL.

Corral and Willis are fool's gold. This is not the draft to get desperate and try to snag a QB in the first round. This is a very poor QB class.

Spending money in free agency is fine in theory but for the $35 mil you would spend on Watson, you would be surprised how little that may get you in terms of elite offensive linemen. That market has exploded, even for interior players. We have to do something about the OL, so free agents will be involved regardless but trying to replace four spots solely in free agency would be prohibitively expensive and unlikely to be accomplished in one offseason.

Trading Shaq is fine, in theory but we are already thin at LB so you make that position even more thin. Not to mention, I think that his contract would make him difficult to trade. The value we get in return is not going to be what we have invested, nor is it likely to gain us an upgrade. If you want to justify trading him for cap room, for sure, I can understand that. Robby would have some significant trade value because his contract is so cheap. We could get some value there.

We could probably get some good value for Jackson in a tag and trade. We have to figure out what his market is going to be, though. He is the one guy on defense that has played really hard every game. Now, it's a contract year so you have to be naturally suspicious of production in those years but he does really seem to have matured and improved. He might be a guy I would be really reluctant to let go.
