It wouldn't be a risk for the other team, they'd just be buying a draft pick from us.

This ^^^ think about when Osweiler had that crazy contract from HOU I think, then was traded to CLE who later released him.

I'm fuzzy on the full details, but that is the premise being explained here.

Osweiler had a 16M guaranteed base salary for that year to whatever team traded for him. Much like Darnold. And that took a 2nd. What would this cost? A 2nd and a 3rd that they don’t even have anyhow.

Fitt and Rhule should be forced to offer their houses as collateral and maybe they will take things into consideration more....

Who the hell is going to trade for him, and then pay him 18 million dollars next season?!?!  Bill O'Brien isnt a GM anywhere anymore unfortunately...

Are you guys even reading what op is saying? He isn't talking about trading darnold and getting ANYTHING in return, he is talking about paying another team a 4th thru 6th round pick to buy Darnold's contract and they will probably release him same day. Happens all the time in other sports.

So in total a 2nd and a 4th to sign him, add a 4th or 5th to get rid of him haha. What a disaster. So this coming draft we'd have no QB, no O-line and picks in rounds 1,4/5,6,7. Screwed for at least another year either way

So you think an NFL team will blow 18.5M of cap space for a 4th round pick? We are well aware of what is meant. The Osweiler trade is brought up every time one of these contracts becomes an anchor. This is not some new concept.

After the cap goes up Darnolds 5th year is going to be CHEAP. He’s also at the very least a capable backup. His first three games were mid-level starter quality. He was playing well. QBs like him are desirable for good teams who want a steady backup.

There are also QB injuries that will happen as well. Don’t underestimate the ego of an NFL coach who thinks he’s the right one for a player. Plus…Darnold has a ton going against him right now. CMC is out, OL is a sieve, WRs have brick hands. There is some OC Out there who will convince his GM it’s worth the pic to have him on the team.

Got to get a capable starter first though

There's going to be quite a few teams next year with plenty of cap space with no shot at winning that might do that for a year. Washington, Miami, Denver.

I'd guess the price would probably be sending a 3rd at that cap hit though.

Why would it be a 3rd at 18.5M when the best example is a 2nd for 16M? And Cleveland announced their “tank” before the draft so we’re in a position not to care, and went 0-16. Plenty of teams have no shot every year and this deal is as rare as it seems. Wasting cap space is as bad as tossing away draft picks. Especially ones being used to cover up a horrible decision
