He is 24 and has a big arm. I guess the coaching staff just thought they could coach him up. But guaranteeing him 18 million before he took a snap was just stupid. He doesn't deserve it.

Gambling on upside.  Young reclamation project with no injury history.  Let's look at the options prior to Sam.  

Stafford - Older veteran with elite arm.  Injuries starting to catch up on him.  Trade was a 3rd, two 1st and Goff.  Plus Matt vetoed coming here.  

The rookies -  fields and wilson landed in tough situations and thus far have underperformed. Lance and Lawrence have potential but neither seem too advanced in the mental game.  Mac Jones has done the most.  He beat out a veteran QB and had some moderate success so far.  That said belichick runs a different kind of franchise.  I highly doubt big Mac would have looked as good behind our suspect oline.  

Keeping Cam or TB.  Pointless.  Gambling on a Minshew or other backup.  Maybe.  Lastly the elephant in the room.   WATSON.  We could have made the big gamble and pushed all our chips in on a sexual predator.  Lol.  Sorry not sorry Sam was cheap and risk reward level was manageable.

Not it’s not. Just in his class Allen, Rosen and Baker all had better arms.
