What did they see in Darnold?

To be fair they referenced his arm talent, not him as a player directly. The team got desperate once Stafford, and the initial items around Watson came up.

Factor in draft buzz of Fields ALSO going before 8th overall, they pulled the trigger on a guy then could sell, former 3rd overall pick, only 23 at the time, and from a publicly faltering organization.

Most people bit on that, anyone that watches the NFL and not just the Panthers was EXTREMELY skeptical of this move, I wanted Fields at #8 even after the trade, because IF Darnold sucks you already have someone in line to move forward with.

Exactly. For some reason they think they can contend now so they're desperately swinging at the fences and compromising our future in the process.

How could you say compromising our future when we don't have a QB, and this upcoming QB class is one of the weakest in comparison to others...

We have no future to compromise at the moment.

They saw tools.  He is an above average athlete and he has some arm talent, although not the accuracy.

If you look at our other free agency signings,  and even our draft classes, you can see a theme with this staff, they definitely like players with tools, measurables, or positive traits.

Cam Erving, Darnold, Henderson, all first rounders, you don't get drafted in the 1st round unless you have some good tools.  Even Elflein  was drafted relatively high for a center and was consider to have good "traits".

I think this staff believes they can take talented players and make them better players.  Honestly it might be their biggest downfall and might be leftover from them being college coaches.

With high school kids you are looking for best athletes and then you turn them into football players.  At this level, once a player has been in the league a few years, the chance of you getting more of them than other NFL staffs is rather slim.

Yep. I have been saying that quite a bit. They can't wrap their head around why you need very good to elite players that play at very good to elite levels. They assume they can just motivate and teach talented guys to get the most out of them. This isn't pee wee football, it isn't high school football and it isn't college football.

It is pure hubris. They believe they can succeed with players that have already failed or they believe they can take guys 90% of the league don't think can be successful and make them successful.

We have no future to compromise at the moment.

Our future was compromised when they decided to trade picks for Sam Darnold and extend him. That hurt our chances of improving the OL through the draft in 2022. The loss of cap space for Darnold hurt our chances to sign better OL and to resign core players.

The future was compromised when we signed Teddy Bridgewater to a large contract. The future was compromised when we spent all 2021 offseason making poor decisions at OL after watching them hurt the team in 2020.

Make no mistake, the future was already compromised.

Darnold averaged 2.5 sacks per game in NY.

Hes averaged 4.5 sacks per game the last 4.

We aren’t helping him.

He's also MISSING OPEN reads, he holds the ball to long, the protection versus NYG was better overall. Joe Brady even mentioned it in the presser last week, and I paraphrase '' he's not SEEING it'' in regard to Sam.

The INT to Bradberry the check down was open underneath and I am taking into consideration it was 2nd and 24, BUT we were also in scoring territory. Secondly on the backside dig Robby was open as well for likely the 1st.

It ''feels'' like Sam does not grasp the concept of where we are in a game, he doesn't seem to have a ''feel'' for when to press the issue a little. It was 3-5 at the time and a FG gives us a lead, and forces NYG to do something to take it back.

Two weeks in a row bone-headed mistakes by a guy that has plenty of starts / experience -- calls back to back timeouts last week, and throws for intentional grounding in the endzone, which I partially put on Brady, know your QB, call a run or a screen backed up and punt IF needed.

Heaping this organization's ineptitude on one player is never a good thing and Darnold, coming from a NY Jets team that may have had a better O-line than Carolina, was a shell-shocked QB when he got here. And, to be fair, he's been here less time than most players on the roster.

I look at Darnold as a set of new tires on a car. They're great for a short period of time. But until you fix the suspension, get the front end aligned and get everything else fixed, they aren't getting you far.

He isn't shell shocked, he literally isn't capable of processing what he sees on the field. He isn't capable of being a QB in the NFL.

Go watch the All 22 of every game this year and watch how many times he misses reads or is late on throws because he just simply can't see it. Want to make it worse? Do the same and mark down every time he was legitimately pressured while missing those reads.

You'll immediately understand why this was never going to work.

Sam's brain is and always has been the issue. The mirage of it being bad coaching and team up in NJ just don't want to admit the guy has an NFL QB body but not the brain. He was this way in school and up in NJ, the rest is just a desperate fantasy or plain bad player scouting. The guy is a complete waste of an NFL arm.

What they saw was what happened with Tannehill in Miami to Tennessee and thought we had the same miracle cure of just getting Darnold out from under the same bad coach.

And Darnold may have been, and may still be salvable. The problem is you needed an offense that babies the guy, gets him adjusted, and takes the pressure off his shoulders. You needed Ron Rivera + Norv Turner coached team and an offensive line.

The Panthers keep trying to take short cuts to success without the assets to risk what they're doing.
