When did you give up on Matt Rhule?

The defensive part of the blame for our struggles is probably 10ish percent.

Yet....they are still a top 10 unit in the NFL.

If they keep playing like they have the past 4 games they will easily drop down into the high teens in a few games here. Plus we are already 18th or something in rushing yards total, 12th in ypg. But if we have a few more games like the last couple weeks. Not good things.

Hey, y'all can pick the least stinkiest turd up and try to polish it, but our defense isn't very good anymore. It's way better than our offense and special teams, but it's fallen off mightily just the same.

The defense is not great, but it isn't as bad as you're implying either. Yesterday, we had about 8 3 and outs. That's terrible when you consider most teams average 12 offensive possessions per game. Guys get tired if they're own the field too long.

Years ago the late Dwight White talked about how bad Terry Bradshaw was in his early years with the Steelers. He said before he could get comfortable on the bench the team would have to go back on the field because of a 3 and out or a turnover. Too many defensive snaps will wear a team out.

When Monte Kiffin was DC for those great Buccaneer defenses during the Dungy/Gruden era he practically said the same thing. I remember saying that they were great if they could keep the snaps at 60 or less. After that he said we aren't nearly as effective.

Factor that in with the fact that the defense knows how bad the offense currently, I can see why its hard to keep the same level of performance all game long.

I mean, we allowed 25 points, 103 yards rushing and 199 yards passing. They averaged 19.9 ppg, 91.3 rushing yards per game and 260.6 passing yards per game.

Does that look like a stat line where we poo the bed defensively? Especially when, for the second straight week, we were in a 10+ min TOP hole.

Given the injuries, the defense is still performing fairly well. Yesterday was arguably their worst game of the year and it was still very easy for a competent offense to turn that into a win.

If we get more of our injured starters back, they will likely just get better. That is if they just don't start laying down because the offense keeps shitting the bed.

This is a dumb conversation and a overarching after a horrible lose...

If you're done with Rhule.. You might want to take 2 years off because he's here for Atleast 2 more years.. Sorry .. But Tepper is from the Steelers system and they don't fire coaches after 1 season..

I agree that Rhule will be here for 2 more years unless he quits. I don't think it's because Tepper came from the Steelers though. I think it's because Tepper will not want to pay Rhule all that money for just two seasons. Tepper will want to get more from his investment.

Darnold limits the play calling Brady can do because he is so unbelievably bad. Brady isn’t even close to being the problem. It’s all Darnold. Even with this line he’s the worst starting qb with a clean pocket going on 4 years now. No OC in the league is going to be successful with what Brady has had to work with. This is the same guy who made 4 1k yard from scrimmage players with Teddy bridgewater in his scheme. Because Teddy could actually run the system and be quick and decisive and process what was happening on the field. He just didn’t have the arm to stretch the field and was wayyyyy too conservative. Darnold cannot process the field, panics if the first read isn’t open and throws balls directly to defenders. Like this dude should not be in the nfl. It’s not Brady and we would be fools to scapegoat him but this will probably happen because Rhule has no ties to him. Darnold is a franchise and coach killer.

Darnold is bad, there's no denying that. That said, Brady is also part of the problem. The Panthers had third quarter issues with Teddy last season, just like they did in the first three games when Darnold was playing well. That's on the coaches.

I agree that Rhule will use Brady as a scapegoat.

Didn't we have 8 three and outs?  Imagine, two of those 8 were actual drives that take time off the clock.  Now take two of NY's drives away.  Suddenly our defensive stats will look elite just by the offense staying on the field longer and giving NY less time.

Yep. The people blaming this on defense....I really have no idea what you are watching.

Just curious….

Belichick is currently 3-4 and has basically beaten the same teams we have…and lost to teams we beat.

Payton is 3-2 and lost to a full strength Panthers team. Easily could be a 7-10 team this year. Nothing special about them.

Carroll is 2-4

Reid and the Chiefs are 3-4. Mahomes is great but their drafts have been garbage.

These are widely considered the best coaches in the game. Three of them no longer have upper tier starting QBs. So they suck and probably won’t make the playoffs. One of them has an elite QB but the rest of the team personnel has been mismanaged.

Moral of the story: Rhule has been coach for 2 years. Not close to enough time to figure out the entire roster. Which is basically what is required to be an elite team. Great in all phases. The D is showing up. Fix the QB and I think the O will too. Sometimes your players just aren’t good. That’s the boat the Panthers are in right now and you don’t fix that in 2 years. Especially with how hard it is to ACQUIRE an elite QB.

An unfortunate reality of learning how to do something properly is trying and failing as you learn until you ultimately master whatever skill you're learning. Rhule is a successful college coach, LEARNING how to be an NFL coach. He's shown a lot more good than bad, and it'd be silly to give up on him at this point given what's happened with injuries, etc.. I hope against hope that David Tepper is not as much of a reactionary baby as many of the posters on this board. We suck right now, and it's fine to be mad about it, but the steaming, hot, shitty takes about giving up on a new coach 1.5 seasons in are ridiculous.

you can't look at the final score when talking defense effort.

Giants last 3 scoring drives....they averaged 23 yards a drive.

It's a variation of the Eagles game.  The defense wasn't the problem in either game.  They set up wins if paired with average offense.  Some are expecting the D to be able to overcome unimaginable horrific offense.  Offense impacts defensive performace.  The 85 Bears or the LOB or whoever wouldn't of been legendary if....there O set them up to fail for 4 quarters routinely with no offense and sabatoged them with bad field position.  It would have bleed over.  Easy points would be had.

Good points. It takes time to build a good team. I never thought we'd be a playoff team this year. I am shocked at how bad we are offensively. But, this could be a blessing in disguise. We had too many flaws to be a legit contender. Yet, if we had lost a couple of games we should have won, then we'd be 5-2 (maybe even 6-1) and probably over confident.

The holes are obvious. We need to seriously address the o line and QB play. I think the latter would be better if the line was just plain average no matter who is behind center. Our current offensive line play is TERRIBLE. Sam and PJ were practically running for the lives yesterday. I'm not sold on Darnold, but I still think he's salvagable. He could at least hold things down until the 2022 season while we groom a successor for 2023-2024. He just doesn't look comfortable at all, and I can see why since 300 pound monsters seem to be breathing down his neck every on every other passing play.
