Sober Thoughts - Panthers at Cowboys

I've mentioned this previously but it's worth noting again.

If you were around for the 2003 Super Bowl run, you probably remember feeling pretty good until about Week 6 when we went against the Titans.

That game was even more of a disaster than yesterday was.

We absolutely got humbled. People were saying we'd been exposed. All the usual drama. But of course, we recovered and went on to our first Super Bowl appearance.

Is this year's team a Super Bowl team? Seriously doubt it. I'm not even sure we're a playoff team yet.

But regardless, if you think yesterday defines us, exposes us, all the usual drama, then you're basically just wilting at the first sign of adversity.

Pretty bad move, because it's likely not the last adversity will face this season.

Get up, dust off and move on.

I never thought the Panthers, the D, the coaching staff, Sam were what was collectively painted after 3 weeks.

I also don’t think any of those things are what was painted after the Dallas game.

I think when we are done with the 3 game stretch vs the Cowboys, Eagles and Vikings we will have a good overall picture of our strength and weaknesses and exactly where we stack up.

Yeah I think we are still finding things out. I say by November we will have a better understanding of who we are.

We have 4 more games in October, by the Atlanta game on Halloween things will be more clear. We will be somewhere between 3-5 and 7-1.

This game wasn't a mystery before it started. We knew Dak was on fire and going to make a lot of plays through the air. We knew Elliot could run behind that line. We knew their o-line was enormous and talented. That alone is not a good situation.

Then you look at our o-line, and sadly they are outmatched against just about any d-line. We're on a wing and a prayer when we throw the ball, and against a great offense we're forced to run too many dangerous plays to keep up.

We're basically in the exact same situation we've been in since 1995. We have a good defense, a middle of the road QB/game manager with some weapons, and a shaky at best o-line. If you exclude our terrible teams, that's pretty much all I've seen the Panthers have. We've never had an elite QB with a great o-line. It's just never happened and we've been around since the 90's.

Rhule has a backwards blueprint for how to build a team imo. Or he built this team the opposite way I would have built it. I would have started with QB and o-line given what we already had on the team. If you have a good QB behind a brick wall with some weapons, then you should be in every game with the way the NFL puts passing first given the rules. Then work on building up the defense. What good did all of our 1st round pick defenders do against that brick wall o-line and Dak? The rules favor offense.

Since Rhule is doing things backwards I expect him to start building the o-line in the next two seasons. Christensen and Deonte might not even be anything more than depth. Who knows.

First off, tip of the hat as Dallas played a great game yesterday.

ESPN is absolutely hilarious today.  We must be good because they are basically calling them all world.  Dan Orlovzky said the Dallas offense is KCs two years ago and their defense is the Bucs in the playoffs last year.  LOL.

We had one really bad quarter.  Team will bounce back. It’s good to get a loss like this out of the way early

^This, 100 percent.

Take the third quarter away from both teams and it is an entirely different outcome.

We're going to beat the bad teams handily this year. We're going to beat the decent teams this year. We're going to flat out challenge the good teams this year and we'll be killed by the best teams. We're not complete yet.

But mark my words, no matter how good our opponent is on any given week, if they flinch or sleep on us, they'll get beat.

Sometimes a team like we have can do some damage and win further into the post season than anyone has a reason to believe.

People keep putting too much stock in the last quarter of play. The game was over in the 3rd as soon as it was obvious they couldn’t stop the run. Nothing was going to change.

The defense felt elite but I think Snow was out scheming a lot of teams. No recipe for just facing a more talented O-line.

The inability to stop the run was brutal in this game.

But I disagree about "putting too much stock in the last quarter of play".

Whatever the Cowboys D-Coach was thinking by going Prevent (and taking Diggs out of the game), it almost came back to bite them in the ass and balls.

With how bad the "D" was, Sam's two scores on back-to-back possessions with still over 4 minutes to go, gave the much-maligned "D" a chance to make one final Massive play (whether it's an INT, Forced Fumble, or just an ordinary 3-and-out) to get Sam the ball back and really give those Cowturd fans something to gnash their teeth over.

All it would've took....is just that and we'd be having a far different conversation right now.

Can we also acknowledge that the fumble that was taken away from us would've changed the outcome of the game? It would've been tied  or the momentum would've been in our favor and we could've won a close game. Officials still dictate who wins games.

So, this is the sober thoughts I get from the media:

- Panthers ARE NOT really a great team, they had not played anyone.

- Cowboys ARE a great team because beating the Panthers show that they are.

- Because the Panthers had not played anyone until Cowboys.

- HOW BOUT DEM BOYZ!

I hate this too. We’re overrated but a win against us is a major accomplishment. Every damn time.

It boils down to the Panthers had a cupcake first 3 weeks with 2 rookie QBs on bad teams and a Saints team led by Famous with a weakened roster/staff with covid and injuries.

The secondary looked completely lost in the second half. I’m not sure if losing Horn was a reason yet. Their OLine looked like it was twice the size of our DLine. I didn’t like that matchup at all.

They ran into a stud QB on a loaded team who will probably challenge for the NFC. Need to take this game and throw it in the trash and move on

That same Aints team with a full staff just lost to the Giants

This.  I remember Dallas did the same thing to Seattle in 2014 when Seattle had a dominant defense.  Some of the same pieces are still on the O-line they have today.  Seattle still went on to win the NFC championship.  Not saying we will, but even still, Dallas hung 160 yards rushing on them.

Does anyone have a gif or clip of this play?

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
