Are Panthers a very self-less defense?

I'm seeing some stats today that confound me a little bit.

On one hand, the Panthers lead the league in sacks, QB hits, Pass-Rush Win Rate, fewest passing yards allowed....

Yet, in the individual pass-rush win stats for edge rushers and DTs, only Haason Reddick's name shows up among top players.

 

 

 

I was a bit surprised!

I'm guessing it's a combination of two things:

1) it may be simply a function of the technical definition of pass-rush win rate.  Our defense is succeeding in pass rush and disrupting QBs without meeting the technical definition of a pass-rush win.

2) Our defense is playing nearly seamlessly as a unit - very much pick your poison - with MANY players having a role in pass rush success.  Very selfless.  Doesn't depend on one star player.  Which makes it that much harder to scheme against.  When we can get pressure from so many different players from so many different looks, it makes it very tough for opposing offenses.   I love it.  I really hope we can keep it up!!

In general, while we know the guys are competitive and love their stats (e.g. the golf-cart sack competition between Burns & Reddick), so many guys aren't getting a ton of flashy stats (Jermaine Carter, DaQuan, Brown, Shaq, Donte, Luvu) and yet what they are doing is absolutely critical to the defense's success.  I don't know when I've seen a defense play AS A TEAM this consistently in a long time.  (Maybe I'm just noticing it more because our secondary is so improved and it's really evident how the excellent coverage is feeding the pass rush and vice-versa.)

Whatever is going on, I'm loving it!!!

@KB_fanYes it is selfless. It's a very odd defensive group that we have. They are so young but yet seem to all be playing for each other. Yes we have our stars, but they are just as happy when Morgan Fox or Brown or YGM make plays. I responded to you a lot on twitter but Chinn is my best example. Stats don't blow you away but he is essential for our #1 defense

Absolutely.  When you think of the hype Chinn got last year because of how he flashed, but this year in his new position he's a bit "invisible" on the stat sheet, but playing GREAT and absolutely ESSENTIAL to the D's success.

I LOVE this kind of team.

I think there's definitely some truth to this.  How many sacks have we gotten where someone comes through completely unblocked?  Hell, for how good Brian Burns is, I'm fairly sure all 3 of his sacks were unblocked.  As someone else mentioned, props to Snow's scheme in confusing the opposing offense.

Kurt Warner broke it down really well on his YouTube channel. He showed a play where Shaq ran in and pushed the center to his right and then someone else came in around him. They are creating opportunities for one another to come thru without resistance. Shaq’s whole purpose on that play was to free up his teammate. That’s why you hear them talk about their teammates being unselfish.

I'm not getting into that debate lol.  All I know is that the only thing that can kill a lion, besides another lion of course, is a pack of hyenas.

      No, but considering that over a third (~35%) of their schedule are the other three teams in the NFC South and all three have strong starting (and back-up) RBs that the offense leans heavily on to open up the pass game. ATL: Bijan has this season and next season before the Falcons have to make a decision on his fifth-year option, Tyler Allgeier is a proven back-up RB that could start for some teams, and 2024 sixth-round selection Jase McClellan returns from a knee injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season starting in early September. Combine that with their QB situation, and that's a team that is going to lean heavily on the run just like they did last season when they were 8th in the league in rushing attempts, 10th in rushing yards, 8th in rushing TDs, 9th in rushing attempts on 1st down, . NO: Similar situation as ATL, but for different reasons. Derek Carr is in the second to last year of his deal and the QBs behind him are Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener, and Ben DiNucci. However, they also have Alvin Kamara. One thing that we know about Kellen Moore from his stints as an OC is that he likes to lean heavily on a versatile RB1 while bringing in an arguably equally versatile RB2 to keep their foot on opposing defenses. When Moore had Zeke in Dallas, Zeke was 4th in the league in touches during those four years but Pollard still averaged 10 touches and nearly 60yds a game. Look for the Saints to shore up their RB room in the draft with Kendre Miller, CEH, Jordan Mims, and Xazavian Valladay all competing for touches behind Kamara. TB: Bucky Irving exploded onto the scene last season, but we can't forget more than capable (now-)RB2 Rachaad White. White is on the last year of his rookie deal, but Irving is under contract until 2028. Last season, the Bucs were 10th in rushing attempts, 4th in rushing yards, 3rd in YPC, 7th in carries of 20+, 8th in carries of 40+, and 7th in first down rushing attempts and that helped Baker Mayfield be one of the most efficient passers in the league with a 71.4% completion percentage (good enough for 2nd in the league).
