What does the Henderson trade mean for Donte and Jaycee?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. 

 

1. We already knew Horn was going to miss at least a few months, and as a 3-0 team ready to compete right now we were looking at CB options for while he was out anyways. This doesn't mean we know Horn is definitely out for the season or there's long term concern, etc. Is that possible? Sure, but it was possible the instant he got hurt on Thursday. He could still be back for late regular season/playoffs. Horn's injury expedited us making a move but it doesn't mean anything more than we already knew about his injury being likely 2-3 month recovery and possibly season ending (Rapoport's words). 

2. In this modern pass happy league, you need great CB play. It is the 2nd most important position on D aside from pass rusher, maybe even more important but a bit easier to find than elite pass rushers. Most teams around the league are running a base set with 3+ WRs. Gone are the days of just having 2 starting CBs, teams have 3 starting CBs nowadays.

Acquiring Henderson doesn't mean anything about Donte's status past this year. In fact, with him and Horn on cheap rookie deals we can afford to spend on 1 player in the position group and have it fit in the cap structure and have a stacked top 3 CB group for the next 3+ years. It will come down to what Donte is looking for and what he can command but don't assume because of this trade that Donte is gone after the year. It was always going to come down to what Donte was looking for -- if he's trying to be the highest paid CB in the league, he probably walks. If he will consider a relatively team friendly deal that still gets him PAID, I think we keep him, and have a stacked CB group.

 

3. We acquired a top 10 CB (first taken in 2020) for a free agent signing and to drop from mid/late 3rd round to early 5th round in the 2022 draft. That is an absolute STEAL and a no-brainer trade even if Horn was fully healthy and Donte was locked up for 5 years. The Jags with Urban Meyer and the new front office clearly didn't want CJ there, they were desperate for a TE for Lawrence and we took advantage of the situation, expedited a bit by the Horn injury, but I think at the end of the day this move is independent of our other 2 CBs.

Means more for Jackson than it does for Jaycee. Jackson either slides to nickel next season or they let him walk. Going to depend how Henderson looks this year.

I don't think D Jax will be back, too many important players to re-sign like DJ, Reddick, and possibly Sam if he continues to play well.

On our D#, CBs are rotating. Horn was playing the slot quite a bit.
DJax+Horn and if he pans out, CJ Henderson, are a hell of a combo to have for the next 3/4 years (and don't forget Chinn...)

Very possible. We may have to choose between Reddick and Donte. But I think those decisions are completely independent of acquiring CJ and would've happened regardless.

What it means is there there is literally no excuse not to go OL with the 1st pick next year unless an absolute stud, I'm talking STUD, falls to us.  Otherwise why would OL not be the 1st pick?  

CB, no.  WR, no. TE, no.  RB, lol.  QB, probably not unless Darnold face-plants but even if he does... the QB class is horrendous.  DE or DT, not unless a stud falls and I only say that because you can never have enough pass rushers.  LB, nah unless it is a stud.  

Really the only other position that I would say right now might warrant a 1st round selection is safety.  Otherwise it has got to be OL, right?

Donte could be an all pro nickel if thats what they have in mind for him.

In my mind the Horn injury will affect us more than CMC, so this could be a great move if he can stay healthy and reach his potential. Our defense is what will make us a contender, and losing Horn is huge. So far he has proven to be the right pick.

Trades like this are trades the team moving the player end up regretting a lot. Drafting a guy in the top 10 and trading him 1 year later for a third and a TE isn't great business. Maybe the new regime just wasn't a fan?

Jackson to me feels like Curtis Samuel all over again. Injury prone speedster going to ball out in a contract year and signs a big contract elsewhere.

Great move for now and the future. Love the way this team just doesn't sit back and wait. If you're not exactly what we need, they move on. 

I wild think DJax would stay for a decent check because happiness and success doesn't just come with a bigger contract - see JNO w/Washington and so many others for reference.

I think we have the cap room to sign DJ Moore, Reddick, D Jax long term (3+ years each)

We should have the money to retain Jackson but it will come at a high cost down the road. It's too early to say at the moment. If CJ lives up to the hype we could let him walk. If CJ looks mediocre I definitely want Jackson retained. Next year was supposed to start our window to win.

The thing is our front office has done such an excellent job in finding solid talent in free agency that I have no problem letting Jackson walk and filling other holes at safety to replace Burris, and putting much more effort into the o-line.

I think they’ll sign Donte. Horn & Henderson being on rookie deals makes it possible. Just like with Robby, I’d think they have a certain number of $ allocated to the CB position and will extend Donte until Jaycee/Henderson (if worthy) get an extension
