All our fans should get out of the mindset of promoting the incorrect perception of the Panthers being in a "small market".

Charlotte by itself is TV market #22, ahead of other cities with NFL teams like St Louis (23), Indy (25), Pittsburgh (26), Vegas (40), Jacksonville (43), New Orleans (50).

If you include Greenville/Spartanburg -- the panthers would be #12 just ahead of Phoenix and Seattle.  Throw in High Point/ Winston-Salem and we're ranked between San Francisco and Dallas.

Saying "small town" just isn't accurate when you compare the "Carolina" marketing area to other parts of the country.

Yes now, hurney joined the Panthers in 98.

Good stuff. I’ve been restoring a ‘61 t bird, including rebuilding the engine and transmission. Been a really fun project. Not touching the interior though, not my expertise and it’s pretty solid as is.

Nice! I love old cars and trucks. They are much easier to work on and look so much better.  I've installed ac and added electronic fuel injection so it's much nicer on long trips.  40-40-20 customer leather seats sitting in the garage ready to go in. Got to get my sound system in first,  much easier to do with the seats out lol.

I went electric this time around.

I know your thoughts on Hurney, but he did play a big hand in making an under funded small market franchise relevant. No excuses but he was about as competent as his skill set allowed, Tep even acknowledged  that..

The issue was always Jerry being tight and controlling.  And that included the GM position.

oh wow a rational take on hurney on the huddle.

hurney wasn't as bad as people preach, but he was dumb. I'll forgive the overpays for playes like Beason, TD, and even Dwill -- most gms at the time would do that. And I'll still maintain he had a decent eye for talent and hit on some gems more often than most. But he had no plan and far too often took stupid risks for no reason. Add onto the fact he was too much of a people person here in Carolina, he would let lack luster players linger and stick around instead of seeking upgrades.

we could've done way worse than Hurney, but we could've been better too.

I'll dig up the 1998 numbers eventually.  In the meantime, 2006 numbers show:

  • Charlotte was #26, ahead of San Diego (27), KC (31), Buffalo (49), Jacksonville (52)
  • Adding in High Point would put the area in-between Seattle (14) and Minneapolis (15)

still not "small town" in terms of TV market size.

Just to demonstrate what you said. Here's a list of the top 30 Metro areas in the US.

Charlotte is 21 and Raleigh, which is not very far away is 29. Plus the top areas like NY, LA, Wash/Bal, have 2 teams and places like Port, Orlando, who are larger than us, have no teams.

So 21-4-2= 15. We are 15th in the league without considering Raleigh.

Hurney was useless outside of the first round and had no idea how to manage a Salary Cap. We could have done much, much better.

    • I'm with you.  Even an extra 3rd would help.  None of the players you listed are elite though.  Sadly there are very few of those in this draft, but there are a lot of good players in the late first and into the second. We need to realize that we can't get all our needs in this year's draft.  We know we need some sort of edge, a safety, and I feel we need to use one of first 4 picks on a CB, preferably 3rd at latest.  And I want to draft an OT in 3rd to learn behind Moton this year. The extra 2nd would be huge.  2 things Bear Hands has noted in other threads, we can get a rusher in the mid rounds of the first, and if a good LT is available at our pick we should be able to get a deal. I'm ok.  If the media takes are close, trading back to around 15 should get us a second, and since our second is near the end of that round, getting one earlier opens up a whole lot of opportunities.  Either way, Canales builds his infrastructure with this draft.  Next year, with all our picks and probably picking somewhere between 10 and 15, we can get real stars.   All of this depends on hitting on picks this year.
    • You got the gist of his main issue. He plays LB or whatever on D, but hates to tackle and contact. That's the summary.  I normally have a wide margin of " Hey vet min/bring him for try out/maybe he changed/etc etc". But he can not be trusted, * but he did just have his "best" season. He's like those RB that refuse to run between the tackles, bounce everything outside...they too are scared of contact. That's like the whole point of NFL, he's able to trick and athlete his way for 5 years, props to him and his agent.  Me personally I view him like virus, I wouldn't want him on film shying away from hitting while the rookies&UDFA are looking for how the Panthers do things. Plus Im the biggest sucker there is about giving former 1st, 2nd, etc another chances. Just not someone who doesn't want to play NFL and fools those with his god given gifts.  ____________________________________________________________   \ Not to add another layer to this, but I feel contact and hitting its the biggest problem for the NFL. I sorta agree with TEs, WRs, and RBs either going out of bounds or falling to the ground to avoid a solid hit(this goes out the window for 1st downs, SB, etc.) Like if a WR caught a deep slant and already gained 17 yards, but here comes a safety with a great angle, Im all for that WR to fall on the ground...... ugh...... But I think the opposite for my defense. I feel this topic is central sun hot and NFL has done a great job in avoiding it. Im surprised NFL is still allowed, I have huge doubts in the future.
    • not sure if carolina picks a WR in this draft, they have some young WR already and will let them develop. Need another vet imo.  I think carolina is going to pass more to the RB's this coming season, look for them to move heaven and earth for Cam Skatteboo.  I really hope they go TE Warren in the 1st. That would add another dynamic to this offense.
