Hopefully the Panthers organization are trying to win games, especially sitting at 3-0 and leading the division through the 1st quarter of the season. If Sherman can help the defense in light of Horn's injury sign him.  

One doesn't drain every last bit of cap space and draft capital for win now mode, if you don't expect a deep playoff push.  You carry over that space and leave that draft capital for the next year, and combined with current player growth, hope to add what is missing with the draft and have more cap space to acquire new and resign current rostered players next year.

I doubt it would take the Panthers backing up the brinks truck to acquire Sherman, he isn't on anyone's team currently so also wouldn't be any need to give up draft capital. 

No one expected a career backup named Jake Delhomme to start for the Carolina Panthers in 2003 much less lead that team to the Super bowl.

      At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
