What was the explanation for punting on the Jets 33 yard line?

I think the theory was, with the pressure we were getting on Wilson, punt, pin them deep, go for the safety and get the ball back. But this isn't Madden and this isn't LSU vs Southwest Beuford County community College.

I'm not sure what Rhule's reasoning was, but I trust the QB.....it's the OL that I don't trust.

Yes, in retrospect, it would have been better to go for it.  But ideally you would hope your punter is able to pin the opposing team in that situation.

As a counter point, how many punters practice the coffin corner from just outside the redzone?  Should we really expect him to nail that?

No we should have added 3 more points if we had an NFL kicker.

You practiced 4th down situations in Preseason with Sam.

Why don't you try it during actual game situations?  

Unless of course Rhule does not believe the O-Line can hold off the pressure on Sam for him to have time to make a throw....

Our d was dominating the game early. Why risk giving up the field position and giving the Jets something to get fired up about?

Until Santoso starts missing a bunch of kicks, I'm going to blame Rhule and his overly conservative gameplan before I assume Santoso is incapable of making a 50 yard kick, particularly since he was 1 for 1 from 50+ in the preseason and outside of the missed XP, has been hitting his kicks right down the middle. Remember when Rivera would punt every time we had a potential 50+ yarder with Gano and he has been one of the most accurate long ball kickers since then? Could be seeing flashes of that. I also think if we were playing a high flying offense like Tampa or KC, no way we don't either go for it or kick the fg.

I don't get it.  Should have gone for it... Or, played for four downs in that part of the field... The 33 isn't amazing field position if we fail to convert.  Just need a playcall that gets the ball out fast and gives one of our playmakers a shot.
