Week 1 vs New York Jets - Loss (0-1). There’s no better way starting off a new season than a home game against a rookie quarterback and a new opposing head coach. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold is pumped up for the ultimate revenge game. Zach Wilson throws for 365 yards 0TDs in his NFL debut but still winds up with the win.

Week 2 vs New Orleans Saints - Loss (0-2). Yes, they’ve lost Drew Brees, but the Saints still have a talented roster and a top coaching staff.  Jameis Winston outperforms Sam Darnold.

Week 3 at Houston Texans - Loss (0-3). The Texans without Deshaun Watson could very well be the worst team in the NFL. Darnold’s first season pick-six is the turning point in another Carolina’s lost.

Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys - Loss (0-4). The Cowboys deep receiving corps shreds the Panthers corners while Ezekiel Elliott reminds us Jermaine Carter Jr. isn’t the long-term solution at middle linebacker. Dallas scores somewhere between 35 and 42 points in a blowout win. Darnold is benched after his 2nd picked six for the season.

Week 5 vs Philadelphia Eagles - Win (1-4). Carolina returns home to win a 13-10 defensive slugfest featuring lots and lots of punts. Brian Burns records 2.5 sacks as the Panthers defense bottles up Jalen Hurts. PJ "All I Do Is Win" Walker makes his debut start for the 2021 season.

Week 6 Minnesota Vikings - Win (2-4). This one hurts. A back-and-forth contest ultimately goes to overtime where PJ puts the team on his back, and leads us to victory. Many start to wonder what if he just started last year against the Vikings, the Huddle is down for a couple of days.

Week 7 at New York Giants - Win (3-4). In a matchup between two equally below-average teams, the Giants can not overcome PJ's 4th quarter heroics. After two frustratingly wins in back-to-back weeks, Panthers fans lament how they could have a 2nd round pick to get help on the O-line for PJ.

Week 8 at Atlanta Falcons - Win (4-4). Christian McCaffrey exceeds 100 yards both rushing and receiving as the Panthers put together their most complete game of the season in a blowout win on the road against a division rival.

Week 9 vs New England Patriots - Win (5-4). Rookie quarterback Mac Jones gets outplayed by PJ Walker and Panthers fans start to justifiably criticize GM Scott Fitterer for drafting a cornerback at No. 8 (Jaycee Horn) over quarterbacks Justin Fields (No. 11) and Jones (No. 15) all the while PJ was sitting right there to be their true franchise quarterback.

Week 10 at Arizona Cardinals - Win (6-4). Carolina wins a close, entertaining, high-scoring road game between two fairly evenly matched teams.

Week 11 vs Washington Football Team - Win (7-4). Despite having a top tier defense, coach Ron Rivera dials up an uber-conservative game plan which allows the Panthers to keep things close until late. A late Washington punt from inside the Panthers 50 yard line sets up Carolina’s game-winning drive.

Week 12 at Miami Dolphins - Win (8-4). Carolina goes on the road and picks up a tough game to a Dolphins team that is on course for a double-digit win season and a playoff appearance. Carolina is now a darkhorse to win the NFC

Week 13 - Bye week

Week 14 vs Atlanta Falcons - Win (9-4). Coming off the bye week the Panthers coaching staff responds with a great game plan. PJ Walker passes for over 400 yards, Christian McCaffrey gets over 200 scrimmage yards, and the defense sacks Matt Ryan six times in a blowout win. Carolina now favorite in the NFC.

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills - Loss (9-5). Carolina gets manhandled by the “Panthers North” as Josh Allen’s name is in the thick of the MVP discussion and the Bills are gunning for a first round playoff bye. PJ's first lost of the season, but the lost was needed because players were losing focus due to the national exposure.

Week 16 vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Win (10-5). The defending Super Bowl champs are locked and loaded on a championship repeat. The Panthers fight hard and find a way to win a close one at home to their more experienced, more talented NFC South rivals.

Week 17 at New Orleans Saints - Win (11-5). With the playoffs ahead, a host of Panthers fans will be annoyed when Carolina wins against the Saints because PJ was left in the 4th quarter when the game was clearly won.

Week 18 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Win (12-5). With playoff seeding still on the line, the Panthers pick apart the Bucs for the second time in three weeks. Darnold makes an appearance at the beginning of the 4th to seal the deal for the number one seed in the NFC.

Did I just read? PJ All I Do Is Throw Ints Walker who only won one game because defense shutout terrible lions. Might be dumbest post I’ve ever read!

making predictions like "we win on a long field goal" or "brian burns gets 2.5 sacks" for a game months away is literally worthless and i don't know why people try to include minutia in predictions instead of mapping seasonal personnel trends against matchups, which is totally valid and far more interesting.

It’s that time of year again for each of us to predict the Panthers record before the season begins. Last year I predicted a 5-11 record in Matt Rhule’s first year and I nailed it. While I accurately guessed the Panthers five-win season I only correctly picked two of their wins - Week 11 against the Lions and Week 16 versus the Football Team - when looking at my week-by-week predictions.

Here’s my forecast for the 2021 season. I’m now officially on the record that the Panthers will go 7-10 this year. Now it’s your turn to do the same and put your win-loss predictions in the comments.

Week 1 vs New York Jets - Win (1-0) - Defense

Week 2 vs New Orleans Saints - Win (1-1)
defense

Week 3 at Houston Texans - Win (2-1). The Texans without Deshaun Watson could very well be the worst team in the NFL. Jaycee Horn’s first career pick-six is the turning point in Carolina’s first road win of the season.

Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys - Loss (2-2). The Cowboys deep receiving corps shreds the Panthers corners while Ezekiel Elliott reminds us Jermaine Carter Jr. isn’t the long-term solution at middle linebacker. Dallas scores somewhere between 35 and 42 points in a blowout win.

Week 5 vs Philadelphia Eagles - Win (3-2). Carolina returns home to win a 13-10 defensive slugfest featuring lots and lots of punts. Brian Burns records 2.5 sacks as the Panthers defense bottles up Jalen Hurts.

Minnesota Vikings - Win (3-3). This one hurts. A back-and-forth contest ultimately goes to overtime where Ryan Santoso misses a field goal before the Vikings seal the deal.

Week 7 at New York Giants - Loss (3-4). In a matchup between two equally below-average teams, the Giants ride the home crowd to a 28-27 win. After two frustratingly close losses in back-to-back weeks, Panthers fans lament how they could just be sitting at 5-2 instead of 3-4.

Week 8 at Atlanta Falcons - Loss (4-4). Christian McCaffrey exceeds 100 yards both rushing and receiving as the Panthers put together their most complete game of the season in a blowout win on the road against a division rival.

Week 9 vs New England Patriots - WIN (4-5). Rookie quarterback Mac Jones outplays Sam Darnold and Panthers fans start to justifiably criticize GM Scott Fitterer for drafting a cornerback at No. 8 (Jaycee Horn) over quarterbacks Justin Fields (No. 11) and Jones (No. 15). Through nine games Darnold has proven to be good enough to keep the Panthers competitive, but not great enough to be their true franchise quarterback.

Week 10 at Arizona Cardinals - Loss (4-6). Carolina loses a close, entertaining, high-scoring road game between two fairly evenly matched teams.

Week 11 vs Washington Football Team - Win (5-6). Despite having a top tier defense, coach Ron Rivera dials up an uber-conservative game plan which allows the Panthers to keep things close until late. A late Washington punt from inside the Panthers 50 yard line sets up Carolina’s game-winning drive.

Week 12 at Miami Dolphins - WIN (5-7). Carolina goes on the road and drops a tough game to a Dolphins team that is on course for a double-digit win season and a playoff appearance.

Week 13 - Bye week

Week 14 vs Atlanta Falcons - Win (6-7). Coming off the bye week the Panthers coaching staff responds with a great game plan. Sam Darnold passes for over 300 yards, Christian McCaffrey gets over 200 scrimmage yards, and the defense sacks Matt Ryan six times in a 17-point win.

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills - Loss (6-8). Carolina gets manhandled by the “Panthers North” as Josh Allen’s name is in the thick of the MVP discussion and the Bills are gunning for a first round playoff bye.

Week 16 vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Win (6-9). The defending Super Bowl champs are locked and loaded on a championship repeat. The Panthers fight hard but lose a close one at home to their more experienced, more talented NFC South rivals.

Week 17 at New Orleans Saints - LOSS (7-9). With the playoffs out of reach, a host of Panthers fans will be annoyed when Carolina wins against the Saints because it will hurt their 2022 draft position. But Jameis Winston will throw four picks in this one as the Panthers defense rises to the occasion.

Week 18 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - WIN (7-10).  BUCS locked in 1 or 2. Brady rests. We sweep.

But for now, I’m just happy Panthers football is back! I hope they prove me wrong and have a much better season than the 7-10 record I’m predicting. Nothing would make me happier than at the end of the season for me to admit, “I was wrong.”

Keep pounding!

As a BYU alum I’m the co-conductor of the Zach Wilson hype train - along with Tony Romo - and the future Hall of Famer will throw for 365 yards in his NFL debut but still wind up with the loss.

Week 2 vs New Orleans Saints - Loss (1-1). Yes, they’ve lost Drew Brees, but the Saints still have a talented roster and a top coaching staff. BYU’s Taysom Hill will replace a shaky Jameis Winston in the second half and lead the Saints on a game-winning two-minute drive. (Okay, I’ll stop with the BYU homerism).

Week 3 at Houston Texans - Win (2-1). The Texans without Deshaun Watson could very well be the worst team in the NFL. Jaycee Horn’s first career pick-six is the turning point in Carolina’s first road win of the season.

Week 18 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Loss (7-10). With playoff seeding still on the line, the Bucs pick apart the Panthers for the second time in three weeks.

I’m not overly optimistic about the team this year because of a shaky offensive line and I don’t view Sam Darnold as an above average quarterback. The combination of poor protection for a ho-hum quarterback will largely negate the talent of Carolina’s solid skill players. Defensively, the front four will be solid but the linebackers and secondary will generally struggle in coverage. Panthers opponents will be able to pick apart the defensive with underneath throws and screen passes that neutralize the pressure the front four will generate.

But for now, I’m just happy Panthers football is back! I hope they prove me wrong and have a much better season than the 7-10 record I’m predicting. Nothing would make me happier than at the end of the season for me to admit, “I was wrong.”

    • I think Tepper made huge strides in this area last year as well. It’s obvious he has trust in the Canales/Morgan pairing - and rightfully so.
    • Did you really just source your own Twitter account? LOL
    • There are times during the prolonged, pre-draft process that you abandon your gut feelings and allow yourself to be persuaded by popular opinion.  My gut was more consistent with what Morgan et al did than my conclusions.  Here is why (my theory): 1. With social media, one opinion is often repeated until it seems like the majority. The more you see it, the more you feel that your gut was wrong.  You second guess and conform at times.  In January, if you told me TMac would be there at 8, I would have been very interested because there weren't other WRs like him and he was dominant on a bad team.  I let the comments about film, questions about separation, etc. sway my opinion.  I started comparing him to Kelvin Benajamin in my head (work ethic). So I took him off my board. 2.  Morgan said something rather profound (parphrasing): "We did not want to be restricted by need."  IMO, the biggest needs were Edge, S, WR.  We assume that the biggest need is aligned with the first overall pick in most situations.  Everyone was talking about Jalon Walker because Micah Parsons is a similar beast and Abdul Carter would be off the board.   However, as a former coach at Salisbury High School and someone who vaguely knew Walker's father before he was born, I still could not see the fit here.  I think Walker is a great person and will be a good pro, but he did not fill our needs.  TMac was the best player who filled a primary need and we could not find another TMac-type player in the draft.  However, there would be second round Edges that were, in my view, potentially as good NFL players.  The first through early third rounds were loaded with edges.  3. Since edge was our biggest need, Morgan added 2--one in the second and one in the third.  They mentioned referring to statistics to see the likelihood of a player being available at 55 as opposed to 59, guiding their trade practices, for example.  I noticed the talent grades did not drop as much for edge players into early round three and the WR market dropped rapidly.  Morgan mentioned that they only had 3 second round WRs on their board, which is why TMac in round 1 was smart.  I also posted the following stats from the internet and it is never wrong: First-round picks in the NFL Draft have a higher success rate than those in the second or third rounds. Whilethe first round boasts a success rate of around 58%, the second round is nearly as good at 49%. However, the third round sees a significant drop, with only a 25% success rate.    So let's do math.  If you draft 1 edge at #8 he has (since it is early in the round) about a 60% chance of being successful.  Morgan would earn 6 success tokens for his Edge need. If you draft an edge in the second, Morgan would earn 5 success tokens for his edge need. If you draft an edge in the third, Morgan earns 2.5 success tokens for his edge need. So Morgan gets the draft's WR unicorn in the first round and by using the second and third round selections, addresses the biggest need by collecting 7.5 success tokens instead of 6.   Morgan has a high probability of being successful with 2 of 3 of the teams' biggest needs.  He was not needs driven, however, he was market driven.  Supply and demand.  He was smart. Had we drafted Walker, a player who is a stud and can be most effective as an ILB with versatility, I am not sure we successfully addressed the need.  Other players with first round talent either lacked college productivity or had red flags.  We would HAVE to target one of the 3 WRs the Panthers had listed as second round possibilities (I am guessing Higgins and Burden III and Beck--all far inferior to TMac).  Higgins and Burden III were drafted before they were within trade range and it is not surprising that happened--leaving the Panthers with a only Beck at pick 57.  Putting that in perspective, Edge Scourton was taken at pick 51 and Mike Green was taken at pick 59. However, there were 5 edge players taken in the second round.  There were 6 edge players taken in round 3.  Value TMac was rated #4 by PFF and J. Walker was rated #25.  Meanwhile Beck (WR), the only second round WR available in round 2 (I should point out that Tre Harris was rated by PFF at #66, and he was taken in the mid second) was rated 40.  Had we taken an edge in round 1, it is likely we would have ended up with J Walker (#25) and in round 2 Beck (#40).  Instead, we drafted TMac (#4) and Scourton (PFF #29) and Princely (PFF #50). https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2025-nfl-draft-board-big-board In terms of trade value points, the PFF scores value Morgan's first and second round vs. the probably first and second round (had we taken Walker and then the best WR available in round 2 Beck): So you see, Morgan ended up, using the PFF ranking system, doubling the value he got from the first two picks than if he had taken Walker instead of TMac and then drafted the best WR left at pick 51 or 57. In terms of what actually happened, TMac was drafted at #8 and Scourton was taken at #51--this suggests that the Panthers got great value vs. the PFF rankings.  Walker was taken at #15, (10 places higher than his rankings) and Beck was taken at 58, (18 places lower than his rankings.)  So how did Morgan do if you compare drafting Walker/WR vs TMac/Edge?   So Morgan's value was still 24% higher than it would have been had he drafted Walker.  Of course, this does not factor in trades, etc.  but you get the idea.
