Let's be honest. In one half of a preseason game we saw the summary of Sam's career to this point. Some jitters some scary some good and some potential. Who knows what we're going to get 🤷‍♂️

Sam Darnold

just like last year we got Teddy Bridgewater.  QBs don't change at this level.  You can simply put different talent around them.  Will Grier would look better trying to throw to Megatron than Legatron.

Counterpoint - Josh Allen, Steve Young, Alex Smith

They are the exception to the rule, not the rule though.

Part of the reason I never fell in love with Newton (pre or post Draft) was because his mechanics sucked.

He got by on sheer talent. He improved as a player, but he never made that quantum leap that Rodgers expected him to (after he played against us when Newton was a rookie, Rodgers said he was glad that the Packers were playing us now rather than when Newton made the leap).

It seems like Darnold is more coachable so far, but I agree the test will be when the pocket starts collapsing during the season.

Yeah, he never become the the best he could have been.

He had the talent to be the best to ever play the game.

I mean, guys who enter the NFL can still continue to grow as players.   I’m not saying they doesn’t and can’t happen.   It obviously does.

I just don’t think you can change their DNA. A risk adverse QB will always be risk adverse.  Doesn’t mean he can’t get better. Gunslinger, a gunslinger.

Darnold can improve.  And we can put better talent around him.  Don’t forget, Teddy actually had the best individual season of his career last year.  But they couldn’t alter his QB DNA.

I just don’t think you can change what Darnold is at his core.  He isn’t a good decision maker.  He is hesitant.  He gets jitters.   Talented? Yes.  And you can put good talent around him and good things can happen.  But he will just be a guy IMO.

I agree. But if what you say happens and he remains the same it is going to be directly influenced by the oline we put around him. If this line performs how we fear Sam is going to revert to bad habits no matter how much we coach him up. He can still make plays but you're going to have to take the good with the bad.

Not for nothing but Teddy had a career year last season with some of the best coaching he has ever received in a covid limited coaching season.

Dismissed as 'coach speak' by the OP, this paragraph by our QB Coach literally answers your question. Fix his footwork and you fix his errant throws. He's not a bad decision maker, far from it, but his footwork put (hopefully past tense) him into bad situations. It's why I'm bullish on Darnold - the Jets coaching staff didn't even address it when it was (again hopefully past tense) his glaring flaw. Everything else about his game is what you want in an NFL QB :

“Footwork relates to it in a progression-style passing game. When your feet are on time and you’re in rhythm, you can make quick decisions and you’re comfortable with doing it. Versus ‘Hey, my feet are moving. I’m not ready to throw when I should be ready to throw. Now, my timing is off and I’m doing things with the football that I shouldn’t be doing in normal progressions.'”

He actually has been a bad decision maker. The film shows that.

Some qbs definitely improve at the pro level.

I mean, that is just a coach answer.  What were our coaches saying about David Carr and  his progress the offseason we brought him in?

I got no issue kicking the tires on Sam.  Always said that.  Again, I lobbied for his to go get him before it was really a thing here.  Making him THE plan.....well,  odds favor it predictably not working out well.  And we would say that about Sam if he was anywhere else projected to start this year.   Sam should either be in a spot like Dalton or Mitch T right now.  Either having legit talent on his heels or sitting behind someone.
