No way we have Slavin, Skjei, Gardiner, and Cole on the left side to start the year. I still think Skjei is the headliner for a big trade (Tarasenko is still my bet) or Gardiner goes out on a salary dump.

Skjei is staying, he's one of our core D and absolutely needed with Dougie gone. 2 of our top 4 D slots would be weaknesses without Skjei. I think we'll make a play for Tarasenko but it would require getting rid of Gardiner (either in the same trade or a separate one). Seattle didn't take Tarasenko for free so it won't cost much more (if at all) than whatever assets we have to give to get rid of Gardiner's contract or to get retention from the Blues or a possible 3rd party. We're talking 2nd round pick(s) and/or middling prospects.

I could also still see us being in on Eichel, would be a huge splash win-now move but he could take this team over the top. Could cost Necas or Trocheck, Jarvis and more though so I'm not the biggest fan of it but he'd be a perfect fit for Rod and would give us just insane center depth.  Would be exciting anyways...

As for this Svech contract -- absolutely amazing deal for us. I bet the last 5-6 years of the deal look like an absolute robbery if he takes the step forward we expect him to take and the cap goes up as it likely will once the league recovers from the pandemic a bit. Also, this contract doesn't get signed if we keep Dougie, and keeping him would've impacted our ability to re-sign Necas too.

I think Gardiner may be asked to go to LTIR.  I mean we need to utilize our options just as the Lightning did.

I think Gardiner is the odd man out and will either get dumped or LTIR. A C/RW

He's at $4M and the Canes are loaded on the left side of the blue line. Brendan Smith and Ian Cole can play either side, so the roster has 5 LDs right now. I also think Tarasenko is the play as Eichel is simply too costly.

How long does riding the Jordan Staal horse go on?

I also think Ryan Donato and Kyle Palmieri are really good players for their respective price tags.

Yeah I agree with you regarding Donato and Palmieri, I think we haven't looked into them because I really believe we are trying to pry Tarasenko from the Blues for a fair price.  Sounds like the Blues still want the moon and I just don't think that's going to work well for them or Tarasenko so you better get something while you can.

Eichel is expensive and I do worry about his neck injury.  I don't want to Canes having anything to do with that.

I don’t see any way we can work Eichel and still have enough left over to cover our bases. Even if we do buyout/LTIR Gardiner and trade trocheck or Nino.

Top 3 LD: Slavin @ $5.3M, Skjei @ $5.25M and Gardiner @ $4.05

Top 3 RD: Pesce @ $4.02M, Cole @ $2.9M and Bear @ $2M

Brady Skjei, as much as I like the guy, isn't worth his salary. Nor is Gardiner, but you can't lose them both, and Gardiner is probably Weddel and RBA's choice to go.

Tarasenko is under contract, regardless, @ $7.5M. The roster is still 2 players short and there's $4M of cap space available.

But, looking forward, are Necas and Lorentz the 2 guys ready to step into the shoes of Vinny Trocheck and Nino? There's little doubt that Necas is ready, but Lorentz is still a couple years away. Nonetheless, I can still see the roster without Vinny or Nino at some point.

I don't think Fast is going anywhere unless it's a good trade. He's a bargain at $2M.

So, here's the challenge-

Show me your best #2, 3 and 4 lines of forwards only (we know Aho & Svech are the 1's) and what those lines look like without either Trocheck or Nino.

Ya that’s the thing. I think we are positioning Svech to anchor either the 2 or 3 in a year or two without Nino, Tro and Staal. I don’t see a way we don’t at least test Jarvis at camp and potentially on the roster earlier this year. Even if we pick up Tarasenko we’re still in reality a man or two down in the forwards. I agree Lorentz might be a standard 4th line starter this year, Necas I see . But I really wasn’t impressed with our depth at the end of last season.

I’d really like to see us bringing in a solid 1st line left winger to pair with Aho and Teuvo. Let Svech continue to learn to anchor his own line and let Necas middle between the three. That’s the thing about Tarasenko, he’s another high powered right winger, which we have a wealth of. We really need someone that can truly compliment and improve our one line.

Ya Svech could be that guy, but we know rods propensity to pull svech off that line if things aren’t clicking.

    • Best to see Icky in the position we drafted him in to see if he continues making progress. All signs point to Canales/Morgan staying on board and so decisions on whether to move him elsewhere on the line will probably be done during the offseason. Personally, I'm more concerned about a more long-term answer at safety and Moton's spot. Love the guy but he's a FA after 2026 and he'll be 32 by then. Kinda has that sign of having to let a player walk one year too early.
    • All I am saying is IMO if we were going to rework or extend his deal I think it would have happened by now.   Just feels like they are going to bite the bullet and let it run its course
    • I mean me speaking honestly per normal- RT is not even on my radar for needing fixing....it sorta should be, but I feel its around 20s in "hey this need attention". Motown could have another 5 years of solid play leftd in his body and mind. I know something needs to done with his contract, its had money pushed back into the late years like three times now. He got like a 38 million cap number cause rhule, frittterererer and this past season Dan deferred money.  I think he's been "healthy" for most of his career and seems to work hard at being able to play. He's a good player to have on the team. I got no idea how this plays out.   We need to have friendly bet about Christs next contract- I say he gets 8million per and 40% guaranteed. If he gets below that, you are the true kungfu master- deal?
