Henning vs. Fox: NFC South matchup of the week

I liked Henning, and said so at the time. I think he's a lot better than Davidson for sure, and I've said that all along.

With that disclaimer out of the way, it's BS that he enjoyed the love and respect of his players. Mike Wahle even went on record with complaints about his lack of imagination and always going on "1". He may have been a scapegoat, and he may have been held back by Fox, but he wasn't exactly revered in the locker room like the piece makes out. It's fluff designed to create some drama in this matchup, nothing more.

Besides, it's more Meeks vs. Henning than Fox vs. Henning. Isn't it?

Wahle was also one of the most disliked people in the locker room. He was one of the guys Jake was referring to when he said we got better by subtraction last year. Henning is a good OC. Fox screwed him!

I'm still waiting for some real evidence that Fox was holding Henning back. He actually called as many or more passes in his last season here than at any other time. Just because it wasn't working, doesn't mean he was being held back. If anything, there would have been more runs if Fox was overriding him. Hell, Weinke threw the ball about 50 times in the Giants game that year...there was nothing conservative whatsoever about that game plan. The reason they went to the wildcat against Atlanta, was because Weinke just plain sucked as an NFL QB.

I'll never forgive Henning for the 2006 Philly loss. 1st and goal, instead of running it in for the tie and/or touchdown for the win. he throws to keyshawn and gets picked. I didn't blame Jake for that one.. i put that all on henning. It was Dwill's first start, dude was unstoppable.

To me, the #1 reason that Henning got fired, was that he kept calling play action passes without establishing the run first. That's just insane. You don't keep making your QB turn his back to the defense unless you know that they are respecting the run fake, and aren't gonna tee off on him. Well, they didn't respect the run fakes and Delhomme was getting his ass kicked while he was trying to wait for those slow developing pass plays to open up. It had nothing to do with Fox holding him back or being more conservative, IMO.

reeder gives his 2cents

So what happened, did Henning undergo a metamorphosis after getting fired by the Panthers after the 2006 season and sitting out a year?

Hardly.

The reality is Henning has a brilliant football mind, but his hands were a bit tied when it came to his creativeness in play calling since everything had to go through conservative coach John Fox
