not really as long as they make moves now.

kickers are really fungible and several starter quality kickers end up cut every year, like this one

it's not like anyone is worried about the kicker gelling with the team or whatever

every year there are like 1 or 2 incredible kickers, 1 or 2 dreadful ones, and everyone else is replaceable.

This.

What advantage would a kicker on the roster during training camp have over a kicker who camped with another team? He's more familiar with the nuance of the "Kick the Ball" pages of the Panthers playbook?

Competition to try and raise Slyes game. Not giving Slye real competition just ends up handicapping him.

I get that Syle having the strongest leg in the league helps his value with kick off duties and the ability to attempt record breaking field goals. (Unfortunately he missed all of those kicks last season)But it’s getting to the point where he needs to be cut or we need to deploy the kick off specialist strat this season.

Who here remembers our friend from over the pond Rhys Lloyd?

Yep! John Kasay was money on field goals!

My read is that it was intentional. It seems like Slye has a confidence issue, so I think they were trying to give him a confidence boost that he was going into the season unchallenged as the starter to see if taking the pressure off would help cure his case of the shanks.

And by all accounts it did not seem to have that effect.

He's had that "case" his entire college and NFL career. I don't think it's a temporary ailment, he's always been that way.

Spot on with that. I complete agree, but I do believe it was a mistake.

Rhule likes his distance. But it doesn’t mean poo if you can’t hit the 20’s-30’s-40’s automatically.

I will point out that his career high school long was 46 and his career college long was 50. He actually has a long history of not being able to make those 50+ yard kicks, despite all his leg. Similarly, he was a career 72.4% FG kicker in four years at VT.

He is, quite literally, the kind of kicker that goes undrafted, gets a few tryouts and then never plays a single NFL game that we see every single offseason. For some reason we opted to keep him. I'll make this easy prediction, he won't last in the NFL long after we jettison him.

He is the kicking version of Brenton Bersin.

As Mr.. Scot pointed out we brought in three kickers this offseason to try out, so I don't think he was being protected that well.

The team talked at some point this offseason about bringing in a sports psychologist to work with him. That was what clearly didn't work.

I was done with him early on but I can't see why anyone inside or outside the team isn't over Slye at this point. As I stated earlier, kickers will be cut and be available, if we roll with Slye this season all his shanks will be 100% Matt Rhule's fault.

We will stick with Slye which is dumb as hell. Pinero definitely isn’t the answer, there is a reason he keeps getting cut.

It's been injuries honestly.

Injured in 2018, his rookie year. Won the job in Chicago in 2019, then got injured again in 2020 and was placed on IR.
