Notes about Perryman and depth

Interesting notes about Perryman and the depth of the team from the article posted on Panthers.com about what we learned from training camp below.

**Its still not a particularly deep team*

We mentioned Carter and Thompson earlier. There's not really much of substance behind them at inside linebacker.

It might have been Denzel Perryman, but he hasn't made a great first impression this camp. He appears to be lighter than they'd prefer (both Carter and Thompson have mentioned adding weight this offseason), and he's barely practiced after a soft-tissue injury on the first day in pads.

The good news is, there's generally more of a supply of veteran inside linebackers than other positions, because it's a spot many teams try to get younger and cheaper at. Bringing in old-head Josh Bynes last week was a step in that direction, but Fitterer specifically mentioned that position as something he'll be looking at when other teams make cuts.

They'll also be looking at offensive linemen, and a few other spots over the next week and a half.

If the joint workouts with the Colts and Ravens proved anything conclusively, it's that those two teams are a year or two or five ahead of the Panthers in terms of roster construction, and it's most evident when the twos and threes are on the field.

That statement pisses me off honestly, esp coming from the team site…5 years??? Give me a break.

What, you want them to pump out that it's all sunshine and unicorns?

Rivera and Hurney left us with a wreck of a roster... and then Luke Kuechly retired.

Rhule (and Fitterer this year) has added a TON of quality depth to the team. It's a 53 man roster - with the best will in the world, you can't turn over that team in two off-seasons, and that's IF you hit on all of your FA acquisitions and Draft picks, which never happens.

We were competitive last year, I expect us to be more competitive this year - albeit a lot of that rests on Darnold's shoulders - and I expect Playoffs (or at least a Playoffs number of wins) in 2022 if the trend continues.

LOL…This is not a league with teams deep in talent everywhere.  You want depth in the right places but yeah…MLB is a weakness for us

We aren’t there yet in year 2 of the rebuild.  Ok…thats fine

Thank you. In today's NFL, secondary and DL are prioritized, and rightfully so.

It's literally our coach's second year and our GM's first. Calm the fug down, people.

I'm in wait-and-see mode. If Darnold doesn't pan out, we will have to find a franchise QB, or we may seem light years behind the Ravens and even the Colts for years on end. That's my worst nightmare, being the Bears in regards to QB purgatory for the last decade.

I get that, but this staff is going to find us a QB. If it's obvious it's not Darnold, they'll move on quickly. We could end up like the Bucs. Stacked roster, find the missing piece, then championships. It would be even better if we won a SB with our own young QB rather than a geriatric rental that's going to have his number retired up North.

    • Easily. To be able to plug in a backup LT without much drop off from your starter? That could mean the difference between playoffs or sitting at home in January. Good/serviceable smart young and healthy LTs that won’t lose you a ball game at reasonable $$ don’t just come along every day. Everyone talks about the most important positions on a football team… backup LT is in the top 10.  Picture next year… the team is scrappy and competitive, 4 and 3 record, second place in the South. Morale is good. devastating run game that Let’s our marginal defense get plenty of rest. We play the Bucs and win, going to 5 and 3, but we lose Ickey to a high ankle sprain. Atl loses that week and are now at 5 and 3 as well. There is no Ickey and no BC because we let him go… and we go in to Atl the next week for a battle of first in the south. Week after that is the Jets…. Now they lose both by 10 and 3, respectively, and fall to 5 and 5 going in to their bye week. Atl is at 7 and 3. Out of typical Panthers desperation, they try to rush Ickey back in to the lineup with a saints game coming up…  Back to good old Panthers football, always playing catchup. Another season at .500 and the fans sadly rejoice in mediocrity, when playoffs were in reach. This team always overestimates its ability to pick up quality o line depth in the draft or FA and it always blows up in their faces. Like Chuba, I see him as being part of the core that Dan is trying to build. Work on his contract now and see if we can come out with something mutually beneficial. I’d consider 3 yrs at $25m to be very fair.
    • it would be great to have "double trouble" again, I even had a T- shirt for Williams and Stewart and the double trouble logo, was a great time to be Panthers fan. We shall see...
    • Sounds like a plan. Those are the teams we should be mimicking! lol
