Will Ian Thomas make the team?

He's been pretty invisible this camp. Given some of the areas where roster is thin, OR the opposite of too much talent at some positions (Dline, safety?, WR) of guys who we want to keep and don't think will survive PS, it's getting hard to justify keeping him.

I was so excited when we drafted him.  I truly thought being under the wing of Greg Olsen he was going to become a star.  He has never step up and done anything. A play here and there to tease us but for the most part he's been non existent.

I would rather see Fitterer get a low round pick for him but based on the talent we have at TE. He's #4.

Trade or Cut.

I think there is a 98% chance Thomas makes the team this year.

Thomas has not produced like anyone would have hoped, but he is nowhere as bad as some people want to make him out to be.

Tremble is a rookie, and Arnold is certainly not the biggest TE out there- he's already taken some massive hits he didn't seem thrilled about.

We need another experienced option.  Tremble has worlds of potential, but TE is historically not a position where rookies make that much of an impact.

I personally think we see Tremble much more as a H-back than as a traditional TE at least for this season.

Ian Thomas is a physical specimen, and the $2M savings or whatever is not worth IMO to give up on a guy who knows the system and has such potential.

Especially with 17 games, depth is crucial.  And nothing against Colin Thompson, but he's not on a good NFL roster IMO.

Maybe I'm surprised, but I just don't see Thomas not being on the 53 man roster

Unless they get a good trade offer and/or a guy becomes available that can come in and instantly contribute at TE (which is unlikely), then I don't see any logic in letting him go.

He's been in with the 1s a lot throughout camp.  He's not the receiver Dan Arnold is, and while I think Tremble has the potential to be a great all-around TE, I think Thomas is going to be the guy in a lot of 2 TE sets to start the season.

If Thomas is cut, I think he would still be on a NFL roster this year.

Hell, he caught a TD pass in camp today from Darnold running with the 1's.

Most teams want to have 3 capable TE's.  I think as Panthers fans our WR corps and TE groups have been so weak we forget how a lot of other teams operate.  You especially need 3 capable TE's when you aren't going to carry a true FB.

Thomas as a 2nd/3rd TE and a ST teams contributor is worth $2M a year IMO.

I think you are 97% too high. Thompson has out-played him and is a Temple bro......plus most important he is 1.4 million cheaper. Unless injuries hit, Thomas is all but gone.

I'd imagine he'd be in the 50/50 column for Rhule and will largely come down to many how players in other positions he wants to keep.

Ideally we will send Thomas out for the next two preseason games against 3rd string opponents and get him to put up so big numbers and then trade him
