Rhule: Moton is the top RT and second LT behind Erving.

I don't wish serious injury on anyone, but I hope Erving stay dinged up just enough not to play and forces our hand to play Moton at LT and Christensen at RT just to see if the answers might actually be on the roster because LT would be one helluva box to check off moving forward.

I'd rather Moton / Christensen beat him out than they're handed the job.

Rhule isn't Rivera. He doesn't play favourites. The OLine is in flux right now - if Christensen continues to hold it down at RT and Moton looks like he can play LT... and Erving doesn't blow them away he'll be relegated to the swing OT job.

It's a bad plan if that's the plan. I think they pretty much realize that Moton is gonna end up at LT this season. Honestly, it's a good thing. Let's find out of he can be the answer there. We're gonna hope that Erving can stay healthy but the guy couldn't even make it though the shorts and t-shirt days of camp before he was already injured. It's just highly doubtful he's going to remain available and I honestly think that's why they've focused on RT for Christensen. Moton at LT and Christensen at RT this season feels inevitable even if it's not plan A.

maybe Matt Rhule can ask John Harbaugh what to do.  Even as the host, he continues to defer to other teams about how his guys will work.

Matt Rhule: "You know Coach Harbaugh.  I said, hey coach, why don't you go ahead and script these practices as well"

None of us has even seen the line play together the way the staff envision it. Y'all need to serious have a little patience, and be willing to be open to see what the staff see.  None of you can say ya have seen it, because the starting line hasn't played together in a game.

I just don't think it matters. It's highly doubtful Erving stays healthy. He could be Jonathan Ogden but it doesn't matter if he's on the sidelines in street clothes.

Yeah, he was pretty quick to jettison one of "his" guys in Whitehead.

Rhule seems to make a lot of mistakes with personnel early in his career but he is pretty quick to rectify them. That really does make some of the poor choices easy to stomach.

Rivera would have kept Whitehead around for 3-4 seasons before finally giving up.

Well he basically has next to no NFL experience. I think these interactions help this staff learn, as well.

Remember that Rivera had to dig into some of his coaching mentors and he had tons of NFL experience.

Damned if you do ask a 13 year, Super Bowl winning, NFL Head Coach for advice, damned if you don't.

I'm sure we'll be asked back to these joint practices next year (which are HUGELY beneficial) if Rhule goes in there and throws a strop because he doesn't get his way.

It's not like they're using our players as tackle dummies ffs.

Ideally, me too. But then what was the point of drafting Christensen and then focusing on him playing RT? A 3rd round pick is a steep price to pay for a guy you plan on just being a backup.

At that point in the draft they probably didn’t feel like there was a sure fire LT.
Also there is a lot of value in a guy who might be able to be a quality OT3.  At some point during the season it’s likely one of the  starting tackles misses a game.

I don't know. Whitehead still started 9 games last year while looking like a tackling dummy on the field. Carter looked immediately significantly better.

Because they're legitimately drafting for value. Like Horn, Marshall, Tremble and Hubbard, he was the best player on their board.

If you recall they only had a board of about 160 draftable players (there's 244 Draft picks). Christensen ticked the boxes they were looking for - especially after they traded down in the 2nd round.

That said, he can't be handed a job, he has to compete and earn it. A 3rd round Draft pick isn't a guaranteed starter. You'd sure love him to be, but it's a successful pick if he's quality depth and pushes everyone else to be better.

The fact he played almost every snap on Sunday suggests that they're very high on him and Erving had better get healthy quickly.

Still a lot quicker to change that our previous coaches.

I think Rhule struggles with some of the initial decisions but he seems pretty decisive when things aren't going well. He definitely doesn't seem sentimental.

Is he quick to make changes with players others have brought in or himself?

I was shocked how quick they gave up on Teddy, will he be the same with Sam?
