backup QBs are only brought up because of one reason.

Sam Darnold isn't even in Teddy Bridgewater's QB tier to date.

What's the biggest assumption about Darnold that he brings different from Teddy...

His ability to throw down field correct....

I mean if u still talking about the Darnold from USC... But I found something of note, you know the NFL changes people, especially after a couple of years...

Darnold has become so gunshy against pressure that his poor footwork is now working even into clean throwing platforms, where he has room to step up and throw. Darnold got the worst ball placement score among 22 charted quarterbacks when throwing from a clean platform last year despite throwing generally catchable footballs, indicating that he’s failing to slot the ball relative to coverage or maximize YAC. A passer without pinpoint accuracy begins to lose his danger as a dink-and-dunk distributor

.....and that became a new problem for him before the Jets dump him off on us.

oh, it wasn't until round Dec..in Gase's first year with him, Darnold finally started learning the basics of the playbook...Does he have a learning disability???? I mean can he not fully understanding the playbook right now be the reason Rhule wants to make sure he doesn't get on the field until he's absolutely ready...will he ever be....???...or fake an injury until he does.... maybe he catches mono again 😂

Yeesh guys.  Even in Darnold's worst year he looked better than PJ did in his game time last year.  PJ had fewer on target passes and more bad throws than Darnold last year and that is unfortunately saying something since it was also Darnold's worst year to date

I would love PJ to be a good backup but some of the posts here lately are making me desperate for the season to start lol

Sam Darnold averages the same yards per attempt as PJ at 6.6 Yard Per Attempt. Good, right?

Sam Darnold averages 5.9 Air Yards Per Attempt. PJ Walker averages 2.9 Air Yards Per Attempt.

Darnold is also two years younger than Walker. You are citing win-loss records like that isn't a team stat. Herbert isn't 1-0. Would you say Walker is better than Justin Herbert? Were you also on the Kyle Allen bandwagon when we were 4-0 with him as the starter? Thinking he was the next big thing at QB? C'mon.

It's a calculated gamble based on him having a poor supporting cast, no QB coach and Gase as his HC. There's a lot of talent and promise in Darnold.

If it doesn't work out we're not tied to him and we go again next year. You would be tied to a Top 10 pick QB for 3 years.

It’s a gamble that every bust will revive their career. Just very few ever, certainly none in the last 10 years when contracts for rookies changed. Every bust had issues and excuses. All had a lot of talent and promise.

if it doesn’t work out, the Panthers have another near 20M backup. What a rookie would have cost for all 4 years. And still have no QB.

PJ’s one start in the NFL was a shutout victory.  When was the last one?

He completed 70% of his passes that game and that was with 3 drops.   Which would have put him at 79% on the day.   Did he have a couple bad throws?  Yep.  All red zone throws.  Think Teddy spoke on that.

Given how little he played I think you have to factor in he came into the NO game late throwing bombs.  Trying to bring us back into a game already lost.  He was averaging almost 19 air yards per pass attempt.

PJ has some promise.  Not saying he should be the starter.  But he has some promise to his game IMO.   He could turn into a legit backup.   He is no Will Grier.

I agree he could, and is Already far ahead of Grier... but this isn't a thread about that.  I don't think it's really possible he's better than Darnold.

Well, if Darnold has the ability to get better. You would have to afford that to PJ too?

Guys like PJ are fun to root for.   It’s as simple as that.  It’s the Jake Delhomme mold.   The unlikely path type stuff.

MVP Cam in his prime could be here and I think PJ still has his little following emerge and cheering for him to turn into a solid backup.

I didn't say that PJ isn't going to or can't improve... I hope he does.  I just think it's ... A little crazy there are multiple threads talking about how we have QB controversy or maybe PJ will be better than Darnold etc.

Well, if Darnold got a little worse.  PJ a little better.  They would both be the same tier QB IMO.  Decent backups.  Which isn't outlandish IMO.
