I hated the Teddy move much moreso than the Sam move.

We were pushing hard for Stafford and Watson, but weren't willing to give up the farm for one, and the other screwed himself too many times.

Sam cost us a 2nd (not downplaying a 2, just compared to two 1's for MS) and some cap which "should" jump with the new TV deals coming.

If we simply didn't think that Jones and Fields were better prospects than Sam, then I support the decision...and it seems that many talent evaluator talking heads did say that were they all tossed in the same draft class that Sam would rank out as the 3rd best.  Now I have no idea what that all means, and likely nothing, but if Rhule and Fitt thought the same way, I totally get it.

P.S. I still think that Russ and Rodgers are dancing around in their minds a bit.

P.S.S. We need to address the OL to give Sam the best chance to thrive.  We have to see what we have.

I agree with this.  It seems they really want a vet at the helm right now.  I'm still not sold they are all in on Darnold being the answer.  I think at minimum they view him as a bridge for a few years that can keep them above 0.500 until they get whatever qb they looking for.  If Darnold can be that then great.  But the backup position needs a lot of work.

Or I could be speaking out my ass because I've misread the whole situation.

Fields was able to run in a TD today, but his 4.4 speed really just means that he is a great athlete.

I agree that from time to time being a great athlete is handy but pocket awareness and mobility in the pocket are the main things I care about.  Ever since Cam it seems a lot of people think you have to have a running qb to win when most QBs definitely arent what I would call a running qb.  I believe Mahomes' 40 yard time was 4.8 and Rodgers was over a 4.7.  Being able to feel and avoid pressure in the pocket and then continue to make reads and throw on the move is much more important than a QB being able to run, as far as I'm concerned.

I feel like people put too much value on a qb running a 4.40

See Lamar, and Kyle, its not about 4.4, its the athletic ability that leads to extended plays behind a "meh" OL.

They took the "safe" approach but you can't hit a homerun if you don't swing the bat. We bunted at no. 8.

You dont draft someone just because they play a position you may need.  The coaches and scouts have to be sold on them based on their film and workouts.  For whatever reason they obviously weren't.  None of the rest really matters.  Could they end up being wrong?   Sure, every team and their staff makes mistakes, but I dont think this was playing it safe.  Honestly drafting fields would have been the safest option for them I would say.

To me I think Chris Simms got in some folks head around here...not going say who but he was down on Fields but at the same time high on Darnold, huh

You mean the panthers scouts and coaching staff?  You think Chris Simms got in their heads?

One series?

This is not a recipe for success...

Probably not but I'm not coaching the team.

I'm just going on how Rhule would do things.

Personally, I would have the entire First Team play the entire 1st Half.

I think that you are probably hitting on it.

Personally, I think that they know that Sam has the upside to be a legit guy, but also the ability to get them through a couple more years to get their guy.  Teddy simply didn't have the upside to continue to "hope" with him.

If Sam takes the next step, it speeds up the timetable, if he doesn't, guess they are hoping he can buy them a couple more years until they land their guy.
