OL is "fluid"

Has Rhule actually done that? Or did he say it once and it has been repeated endlessly here as if it were gospel? But I agree that if we have long term answers at OT in Moton and BC, regardless of L vs R, then we are way ahead.

This is exactly what Rhule said:

"We think he's a right tackle. He certainly has the ability to be on the left but I think most of us would like to have more length over on the left side. So, he's playing right tackle but I think he can be a guy that can go inside and be an excellent guard. I've been really pleased with him and his ability to play tackle. When we drafted him we thought, hey, there's a guy that's going to find a place to play and I feel good about him out there. I wouldn't say he would never go to the left side but we put him there and feel really good about his growth there."

One press conference I know of 8:49:

Some of it is somewhat outdated positional prototypes. The LE playing over the RT was usually more a power rusher/run stopper type where as the RE was the speed rusher pass specialist to attack the QB from the blind side. As the NFL has become more and more pass happy, they're all pass rushers now. If you're playing on the edge in today's NFL, you HAVE to be able to effect the QB. You're practically useless if you can't. Also, somewhat of an outdated norm is that the TE typically lined up off the RT, so he had help to deal with speed off the edge so arm length was less of a necessity for RTs. The TE is basically a move position in today's NFL as likely to be split out wide, lining up on the left, or lining up in the backfield as he is to be off the RT. There really isn't much of a "strong" side anymore in today's spread formations. The priority on LT in today's NFL really just boils down to that's a right handed QB's blindside. He can simply see pressure coming from his right side better, so put your best pass protector at LT.

I agree with all that, especially the blindside part.

Arm length aside.  The OT position requires  a quick power repetitive body motion that puts a ton of stress on joints, muscle, bone and tendons which can lead to injuries (hips etc).  Switching sides changes the effected body parts to a degree and may help prevent injuries.  Just thinking out loud.

Maybe the long term plan is Moton LT and BC RT and we plan to ease there to protect their joints, and our best O lineman is protecting the blind side.

Those are the same quotes and yes he did say that. I'm not saying that he will be a LT or RT or G or whatever. I'm just suggesting that the perception of Matt Rhule saying that "repeatedly" may be more of a result of that one quote getting repeated ad infinitum on here.

What came out of his mouth first matters. I think Rhule kinda realized he said something a little too specific and then said they think he can play on the left too and that he could make an excellent guard, but when asked his initial comment was pretty strong. "We think he's a right tackle." And he indicated that they'd primarily been playing him there.

I agree. I only disagree that some act like that is how he starts every presser. He said it one time. Onetime strongly but not repeatedly.

Yeah.  You're right.  We are repeating and  dissecting this because we are all worried about the line.    In the "move in" conference he mentioned Moton will take some more reps at LT with pads on.  I think they're dipping their toe in the water of Moton at this LT thing.  He gave no timeline when we'll know what the line up will be.  I think we are going to experiment with different lines in the joint practices and won't know until late.

I think you are 100% correct. It is, what's the word, oh yeah, fluid.

If Moton would just say "Yeah, I'm down for that." I think he would've already been announced as the LT. I think the staff thinks he can play LT and now it's about convincing Moton that he can play LT.

The big "if" is, can they both switch sides?  Moving to the pros is hard enough, then on top of it to switch sides.  Moton has handled LT before.  But he'll be uncomfortable too.  Why not just ease BC in behind Erving?

I just don't understand that RT can have shorter arms.  I've never heard that.  We've discussed it here before...but I'm unconvinced.  It just makes no sense to me.  The one study I could find showed that shorter arms had no correlation with effectiveness, instead the study showed the opposite.  I couldn't find anything on RT vs LT arm length.   I guess they know something the rest of us don't.

This is probably the only "Unwritten Rule" in the NFL.

Very fluid meaning LT and LG is up In the air. We know RT, RG, C is locked In. If Moton moves to the left then it would be even more interesting with the combinations of people fighting for the RT role, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we add another tackle by the start of the season or by trade.

Wait.. RG? What am I missing? Who has that locked up?
