Though I don't think we should bring back these players, I'm also not in the camp of not trying to get good players this year so we can save cap.

The huddle is a fascinating mix of ideas.  On one thread people are calling for Rhule's head because they feel we don't have a LT, on another we have people posting that we shouldn't spend much for one because we're not SB bound.  On one thread people are posting how Rhule is in the hotseat, and on another one we're in cool our jets we're not going to go the distance this year anyway.

Yes, we wasted dollars in 2020,2019,2018,2016 and before that at least every other year on losing seasons.  Why did we spend so much money to lose, when we could have just bargain-basement-ed those years and rolled over so much cap, we'd have to win the SB?  Because it doesn't work that way.

People complain about never having two winning seasons in a row, but then we have this attitude that we're not going the distance anyway, just save your money.

Fk that sht.

Every year we should play to win, that includes player acquisition in the offseason.  We shouldn't sacrifice the long term for the short term, but we shouldn't soft-tank or full on tank  the short term either.

Spending too much money on overpaid short term fixes(assuming they are even fixing anything) isn't what rebuilding teams should do.

We aren't going to be able to improve much from the current FA crop but we can sure burn through our cap space attempting to do just that.

The offseason is effectively over minus trading, injury additions, and camp cuts.

This is the way.

Camp cuts for depth, bottom of roster churn.  Rare but sometimes a starter quality player gets cut from a team deep at a particular position.  I'm sure Fitterer and Rhule know which teams have that dilemma at OL and FS and are watching.

As most of you know by now the Moton extension freed up 10M in cap space, putting us in a pretty solid spot financially with 24M available. I think Rhule outlined last off-season that they'd like to carry at least 6-8M into the regular season to account for unforeseen circumstances, so for the sake of argument, let's say we have a functional 17M (average of 6 & 8 is 7).

Names like Clinton-Dix were already in camp for try-outs, and recently Kawaan Short was cleared and recently featured in a picture with Derrick Brown and Bravvion Roy (see twitter / instagram)

Knowing that DL & S aside from OL are weak points, who out of the available free agents draws the most interest from you?

S - Chinn / Burris / Robinson / Clinton-Dix**

DL - Brown / Jones / Roy / Nixon / Short**

I don't hate those additions as depth / rotational players on 1-yr deals, which is likely any team would offer, while still having youth at those positions*

Available Free Agentshttps://nfltraderumors.co/top-50-2021-nfl-free-agents/

Based on this list, there's a few names that at least stand out to me:

OL -  Okung is better than -- Erving / Little / Scott

IDL - KK Short / Jurrell Casey / Damon Harrison as another space eater

Off Ball LB - KJ Wright (Fitterer ties) / Kwon Alexander / Mychal Kendricks (Fitterer ties)

Edge - Justin Houston / Olivier Vernon / Ezekiel Ansah (Fitterer ties) / Bruce Irvin (Fitterer & CAR ties)

We aren’t going into the season with 5 DT’s, especially since Fox can line up there as well.  I don’t see Short as better than anything we have there now...let the young kids get playing time behind Brown and Jones.

Yeah, I think we are largely just going to see bottom of the roster churn for 2021. Any major changes are going to be 2022.

Which of the players listed is so good to waste cap on this year?

There's a way to go before the season, we don't know who will become available.  All I'm saying is, we shouldn't rule out anyone because we're not SB bound.

I was 100% correct because all the schlubs we threw a ton of money at left us with the exact same 5-11 record.

No you weren't.  All we would have is more cap space even after your 2020 hindsight. Indications are not guarantees.  Some surprise, some disappoint.  Some do what you expect.  Some get injured.

Its real easy in hindsight to point out where we wasted cash.

So please demonstration your prescience.

List every player we will waste cash on this year.  I'll save the thread.  We all know some are going to disappoint or get injured, please tell us exactly who they are so we can get word to Rhule.

let’s throw money at Moton, DJ, Burns, etc. and save cap for 2022

So you know for sure that none of them will get injured this year like Short who you complain "wasted" our money?

When KC went after Mathieu and Clark or Tampa went after Brady, they were contenders after and they didn’t sign past backups or injured guys or unproven guys.

What?

KC did their  Superbowl with Cam Erving starting across the Oline, including games at LT.  He was horrible on winless Browns team when they traded for him.

The Bucs picked up Fournette after he was WAIVED.   Jags GM:  "(We) exhausted all trade possibilities, weren't able to get anything there ... a fifth, a sixth — anything."

Tom is still bitching that teams passed on him.

It easy to say that the Bucs were just a couple of pieces away from a SB now in hindsight.

It wasn't that easy during the season when they couldn't even manage to win the division.

We should play to win.  I don't think Rhule is in the hot seat, but I want him to coach like it.

I hope we don’t. That’s a terrible list of players to blow $17M on this year. We aren’t contending for a title so let’s stop talking about throwing away a bunch of cap space on one year deals for depth. If Dix was great, he’d have a deal in place so unless he’s not bad and playing at a minimum contract, no thanks.

This should have been our mantra last year when Tepper preached patience with the process. If the guys we sign aren’t possibly part of the next 3+ years like an Okung or Short, then we have no business wasting money on them, surely not $17M worth. You can rollover unused cap into the next year and we’ve got DJ and Burns coming up soon.  No, just no.

@Michael G said "I doubt we spend any of that money on anyone that's available now. IMO our D-line is pretty set." He did not say anything about spending money on them. Only on FA cuts at OL, or S. But more than likely just bottom of the roster stuff.

And you jumped on him for spending money he didn't want to spend in the first place.

You don't need to make up excuses to rant about past mistakes. Penty of real opportunities elsewhere.

I think if anyone of note is released during roster cut-downs we may pull the trigger on some more O-line help or a safety. WE will definitely shuffle a few players on the bottom of the deph chart probably. We shall see.

People are forgetting about Jones. Very quiet and underrated signing.

Oh noes!! Right?

On a serious note. Not sure many on here are going to jump on that one. But who knows. Seems to have issues.

Not really. He hasn't been healthy since he's gotten to the league. If he can stay healthy though he is a beast. Right now I have heard Sam Franklin took all the first team reps at mini camp. He shows a lot of potential. Still wouldn't mind adding more of a ballhawk though.
