King of Wisconsin… Giannis or Rodgers?

Ya think maybe those brilliant owners had something to do with convincing him to stick around?  😉

He said from the beginning he wanted to do it his way. Giannis is wired differently and hasn’t been a fan of super teams. Again it’s his team now. Why couldn’t those brilliant Warrior owners convince Durant to stay? He didn’t want to. He wanted more credit so he left and so did their playoff streak…

We can even look at Toronto constantly getting knocked out of the playoffs early, Leonard joins them and wins a championship.

Great example of excellent ownership.

Playoffs 7-of-last-8 seasons and a 9-6 winning playoff-series record in that time frame.

By comparison your Bobcats led by Mike Jordan have made the playoffs 3 times in 15 years under his control, and have an 0-3 series record.

Very few teams will be consistent title contenders but regularly making the playoffs is a legit goal -- MJ has failed miserably.

How'd that work out for him?

Their playoff streak didn't end with his departure, they went back to the Finals, again.

The last 2 seasons have been dominated by injuries that no team could overcome but rest assured, they'll be back.

So let's cut to the chase...

...do you believe Mike Jordan is a good owner?

Do you believe Mike Jordan can lead this franchise to consistent success?

If so, why & how?

The obvious answer is no and no. He is accomplishing what he wants, the value of that team skyrocketing.

Certainly not as a result of anything MJ has done...

...he lucked into a broken down yet barely sea-worthy boat just before the tide came in.

It would be interesting to know how much of the team he sold to the 2 hedgies from NYC and what price they paid.  Prior to their arrival he was seriously underwater...

He got his stake at a low price and the value of NBA franchises has gone up tremendously since he has owned the team. He's crushing it, honestly.

Absolutely.  Bought the boat cheap and then caught the tide that lifted all boats...his boat has definitely increased in value.

On paper, yes.  From a cash flow perspective, definitely not.

For him the Bobcats have been the same as a house in a Dilworth.

A lot of folks bought houses right in Dilworth...and while the area has exploded and home values have skyrocketed, the longer-term homeowners have only written checks to maintain the home, and pay the mortgage, etc...

...until they sell their gains are only on paper.

MJ first invested 15 years ago and the team has been a consistent money-loser over the course over that time-frame.  He may have actually been able to deposit some cash in his personal account with the partial sale of the team to the 2 NYC hedgies but that's the only material cash in-flows he's seen since 2006.

I don't think he really needs cash flow from the team. The investment has been well worth it based on the appreciation of the franchise.

He'll make out like a bandit when he gets rid of the team. I somewhat doubt he will be interested in being a forever owner. Although he has been involved at some level in NBA basketball for most of his life, at this point.

The Finals happened to be the Heat vs the Lakers the first year Durant left. The Warriors didn’t make the playoffs. You can’t rewrite history. The Warriors missed the playoffs AGAIN this year without him. They had Thompson injured, but damn near every team had injuries. So Durant left and they missed the playoffs 2 years in a row. Injuries are how we got the Bucks vs Suns Finals this year. No excuses remember? Had they retained Durant they would have been right there with in it. They also paid Thompson while he was injured and he got injured again. You better hope Curry never decides to leave. The owners better be kissing his ass as he controls that team now. The Nets went to become a contender and gave the Bucks a run for their money even with two stars injured. They made a deep playoff run. ANOTHER case of players controlling the team would be the Rockets. Constant playoff team making runs because of Hardin. He forces them to trade him and now look at the the Rockets.
I don’t know if Jordan is a good owner or not. He had some terrible drafts before these past 2 or 3. It’s hard to really tell anymore since the players control the league. Letting Kenna go appears to be the right move…

In terms of quantifiable success no. Bad drafting bad front office hires mediocre coaches. But the product sells. The team suckitude overall is only more of the same though. What can you really expect from a basketball city that thought Adam Morrison was a homerun? Your lack of faith in MJ as an owner is on the surface understandable but Charlotte basketball has spent the last several years attempting to cleanse a very depressing history going back to the early 2000's when it all fell apart culminating in another city having the rights to our team. It all may never fully come together under Jordan. But the team finally has it's young star they can build around so there is hope.

Does it?  The team has consistently lost money on an operating basis.

Ever notice that MJ & Co never provide any disclosure on who his local partners are and/or that they can't attract any local investors?

That's because there aren't any.  There used to be a bunch...McColl, Sabates, Beck, Schwab, etc...but all tired tired of writing checks every year to cover operating losses and gradually their stakes were nearly worthless and MJ owned 97% when he recently sold an undisclosed stake to the 2 hedgies from NYC --- nobody in Charlotte is interested.

Compare & contrast that with what the owners of the Milwaukee Bucks have done:  https://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2015/01/29/milwaukee-bucks-owners-have-raised-nearly-118.html

Scroll down in that article and they list 17 different partner-investors the vast majority of whom are local, and all of whom are successful and know a good partner when they see one!

If you hate the guy just say that and move on man. I'm not making any excuses for his failures it's all there for us to see.
