REPORT: Panthers want to get long term deal done with Taylor Moton before deadline

We also had 0 WRs. CMC didn’t “win” many games when he had a clearly hurt Cam, Kyle Allen and Teddy. Last year against KC, is it a 2 point loss without his 151 yards and 2 TDs?

Arguing that CMC wasn’t a winner is silly considering the QBs and D play he had after 2017.

How many wins did the Carolina Panthers have in his 1k/1k season when he had an ungodly number of touches? Losses are losses my friend there are no silver linings. The Panthers must do better in the division and we must invest in this offensive line to accomplish that.

SMH. It’s a team game and our D was ranked 31st and Kyle Allen was our QB.

Do you actually think CMC was the problem in any way?

We need to sign Moton but acting like CMC wasn’t amazing that year with a mediocre OL is silly.

Might as well trade DJ Moore because he hasn’t even been to a playoff game. Chinn and Burns really suck too since they have a worse overall record than CMC. Amazing how that works.

CMC’s contract didn’t stop Marty from burning $70M in cap space last year for nothing. We should have had no issues keeping CMC, Moton, Moore, Burns and others. Easy if we had a competent GM. Luckily we appear to have one now so I hope we are more like the Saints keeping all their good young players.

Who is saying he is a problem? From the sound of it you have too much emotion tied up in one player. As you say it is a team game. So when you invest a top 10 draft pick and a significant chunk of your salary cap in what has become a luxury position as much as we hate to admit eventually other areas of our roster suffer this is basics of team building. Young talented wide receivers and pass rushers are highly coveted in the league currently I dont think the comparison you are grasping for is helping your argument. And Chinn was in the running for defensive rookie of the year. That was an impressive season but I would wager CMC would have rather had lesser numbers and a winning record. It is not rude or an attack on McCaffrey or anyone else to suggest we should play better in our division and start chipping away at this hole we have dug ourselves.

CMC's contact is garbage the one season we had a winning record with CMC on roster Cam was leading rusher .... CMC's stats haven't led to any winning

You don’t let superstar players go just because your team was bad. The record isn’t on just CMC, it’s not like he didn’t do his part.  He’s a rare weapon that can’t be replaced and makes the offense even better than his contract would indicate. If he never gets healthy, then yea I’m hindsight it was a bad contract. But if he returns to form, like a 25 year should, it will be worth it. Especially since we hopefully have a real QB now, even if Darnold doesn’t improve a lot it’ll be better than last year and 2019.

Super Bowl winners the last several years largely dispel this notion. Quarterback is the rare weapon that can't be replaced. How far do we have to go back to find a star face of the franchise running back that helped carry his team to a title? Marshawn Lynch with the Seahawks? That was eight years ago and you'll have to go back even further to Bettis in 2005 to find another. More over those teams invested in the trenches and built stout o lines. But those days are moving further and further away because of rules benefiting passing games now.

It is easy to pay a guy whatever he wants as long as you control the guaranteed money. The first year every contract is cap friendly and often year 2 averages under the average for the contract. It isn't until year 3 you have to pay a lot and that gives you until 2024 before his contract is a big drag. By then the cap will have really soared and his contract won't look that bad.

Let's say we give him a huge 5 year 100 million contract. We guarantee 60 million of which 30 million is a signing bonus. Of the remaining guaranteed money we guarantee his salary his first 2 years using up most of it. Then the big salary years aren't  guaranteed and  we can cut him without huge dead money. It could go like this.

Year 1  (2022) his salary 8 million guaranteed and with a 6 million hit for the signing bonus his cap hit for 2022 is 14 million.

In 2023 we pay him 12 million salary guaranteed and with his 6 million from the signing bonus his cap hit is 18 million.

That pays him 50 million of the 60 million guaranteed leaving 10 left and he still has 3 years on his contract.

In 2025 you give him a guaranteed roster bonus of 10 million if he is still here in March and a salary of 8 million unguaranteed  with 6 million from the signing bonus for a cap hit of 24 million.

That gets rid of the guaranteed money and his dead cap goes down to 10 million and 5 his last 2 years. You have paid him a total of 68 million and have 32 million plus the signing bonus left over of 10 million for a combined cap hit of 42 million or 22 million for his last 2 years with nothing guaranteed.

Doesn't seem that absurd and if I can figure this out I am sure Suleiman can do a much better job. I hope my.math is correct but if not I am sure huddlers will pile in to correct it. LoL

Nobody is saying ignore everything else and just rely on CMC. We gotta build the OL and get a QB (possibly have checked this box, we’ll see). CMC’s contract doesn’t prevent those from happening.  But the offense is better with CMC than without. His contract doesn’t even reflect how much he actually contributes to the offense.

and nothing in the Super Bowls dispels anything. CMC is a rare weapon. There aren’t any others like him right now. That’s what rare means, hard to find.

Completely disagree. We only have two bloated contracts on the roster currently(CMC and Shaq) but without Moton we are going to be bad for quite some time.

Will you go on record and 115% agree with giving Taylor Moton 20+ million per aka overall top 5 OL money?

If we can get him in the $15-20 mil range, I am 100% down. If it ends up being more than that, it will depend on the contract structure.

Agreed he is a weapon and is very good. But the problem begins with what you just mentioned. Building the o line. Who is to say that is going to happen within this timespan where we have a studly defense and these offensive weapons and all in their prime while being affordable? Those rookie contracts will expire. We should have been assembling a line of maulers three years ago minimum. Yet just the year before we used an entire draft on defense. Can we justify it? For sure. But will it make us feel better if the '21 season is ultimately a failure? One way or another by next year we have got to clamp down and build this damn line and make some draft investments early.

Nothing we can do now but this strategy of “wait until the very last minute to sign great players so they cost twice as much” ha got to fuging change

Fitterer just got here. He is doing what he supposed to be doing and will lock him up. He has shown he is surely not a Hurney devotee. You guys have to get over the PTSD and move into the present. This is a whole new regime in place.
