PFF says the Panthers have the 31st ranked OL corp in the NFL this year

Probably right.. lets hope they play better than expected.

Nine Panthers offensive linemen played at least 100 snaps a year ago, and 2021 will likely see even more fresh faces on the left side of the line.

Left tackle was a revolving door last season, with starter Russell Okung battling injuries. And with Okung still out in free agency, it looks like Cam Erving’s job to lose. Erving has played all over the offensive line, but he’s slotted in exclusively at left tackle for the past two years. However, he’s still a question mark, as last year was the first time he graded above 50.0 in his six-year career. He posted a 58.0 overall grade on just 279 snaps.

Third-rounder Brady Christensen should challenge Erving after an incredible career at BYU that saw him grade out at 87.8 and 96.0 in his last two years. Greg Little was drafted as a developmental second-rounder in 2019, but he’s disappointed on 358 snaps in two seasons.

Right tackle is the sturdiest position on Carolina's line thanks to Taylor Moton returning. He graded at 81.6 overall last year, good for 13th among tackles. He’s graded as a top-18 tackle in each of the past three years.

Center Matt Paradis has posted identical 63.4 overall grades in each of his two years with the Panthers, though those numbers are disappointing when considering his previous four years in Denver saw him grade between 74.0 and 90.2 in each season. The good news is that Paradis improved greatly in pass protection, surrendering 19 pressures compared to 47 in 2019.

The Panthers signed Pat Elflein in free agency, and he’ll get a shot at left guard. The former third-rounder has struggled in pass protection in three-plus years as a starter. His highest-graded season was a 66.6 mark back in his rookie year in 2017. Dennis Daley may be the answer at right guard after producing a 57.7 grade at left tackle as a rookie in 2019. He recorded a 64.7 grade on just 135 snaps across both left tackle and right guard. He’ll battle John Miller, whose 61.2 overall grade last season ranked 52nd out of 84 guards.

The Panthers have three offensive line positions with projected starters who have a history of below-average play, and that’s a big concern unless their younger players step up.

That feels low. I don't expect our offensive line to improve by any large measure this year, lots of new faces, but I also don't believe we're that bad either.

I'd put the Panthers around the better worst 1/3rd of offensive lines at the moment.

LOL what?!?!??!  They were not great last year, but they were not THAT bad!  Plus there are a lot of solid additions from this off season. IDK what PFF's deal is with the Panthers, but DAMN!  Did Tepper steal someones girl over there or something?

They do have Becton and a top ranked OG in Vera Tucker. We got Moton and that’s it.

It is true.  The jets did improve their line.

PFF calculated this using some calculation on the individuals on the line and they assume Erving will start, killing the score.    The article doesn't even mention Scott with a 60.2 grade and 4 starts at LT.

I believe our oline is on par with last year, middle of the pack where pff graded us then:

BTW, if they are using the college pff grades for rookies (which they must be to value jets higher), then

they should put Christian at LT for the calc.  His 96 pff set the record for the highest grade ever for an olineman.  Wonder what the spreadsheet looks like with that.

Is Christensen a starter? Until he is, he doesn’t count.

PFF doesn't know who will start, that's the point.

Trent Scott started more games for us at LT than Erving, put him there.

Why choose Erving?  Because he was a first rounder?  Erving is depth, he started only 5 games at Dallas due to injury.  I doubt he will be our starting LT if people are healthy.

What solid additions? We’ve got a 3rd round, 6th round and undrafted rookies. Other than that we added Erving and Elflein who are both pretty poorly rated for the last few years. Elflein had a 48 rating, which is terrible and way worse than Reed’s 63 and Erving had a 58 rating. Okung was 73 last year.

We can be hopeful but it is Moton and scraps right now and based on PFF ratings we went way down at LT and way down at LG. The overall score reflects their ratings.

Why don't you mention Erving is a first rounder?   Because he's not very good.  He's depth.

Don't judge BC, Brown and Moore by their draft position.  Let's see if they earn their place and how they play.

I know, we can raise our PFF score by getting Okung back, he's still available.  That's how stupid this calculation is.

Wait, what are you saying? Erving’s ranking should be better because he was a first rounder

No exact oposite. YOU assume our additions suck because they aren't 1st rounders.

First, Erving is being paid to start. He isn’t depth and you’re right he hasn’t ever been ranked high hence their lower grade for our team.

5 mill a year is somewhere between guard and tackle, starter and backup pay.  Its high for a backup, low for starting LT.   We brought him in as depth.

I even said Okung is not on our team BTW.

Quote

 Their calculation is correct.

No its not.  They don't know who the starters are.

Quote

Third, the rookies are who they are. Right now they aren’t starters. Is their some sort of hopefulness ratio we should add to our score in case we hit on the draft picks?

Is there some dread/disappointment score we should add to any non 1-2nd round olineman?  There are people who think if an olineman is not 1st or 2nd day, they suck.  This assumption is wrong.  My post said lets see where the rookies fall.  Geese, give them a chance.

Quote

Maybe they play better than past ratings and maybe rookies step up but those are hopes not crunchable

They crunched the numbers for the rookies on the jets and other teams.  Guess their hopes are just more  crunchable.

They don't know who the starter are, they excluded our rookies but included them on other teams.  The calc at best is lousy guesswork.

Again, you said first rounder for Erving which I never said.

I said you didn't mention his round, even though Erving is a first rounder.  Forget it.

5 million a year is #21 on LT salaries. Just because we went cheap doesn’t mean it isn’t low end starter money.

Yes, right in there with the players on their rookie contracts (Wills &  Becton) .   Even OvertheCap lists him as a guard because it is closer to guard money.  He's depth.

Quote

He could be best out by the rookie but he was signed as and currently is slated to start.

Nice hedge.

Quote

PFF is correct to use him.

They can use whoever they want, its just a wild, most likely wrong, guess.

The ranking is accurate and your complaint make incorrect assumptions.

No its not.
