Comfortable in leadership

Going back to the Panthers Confidential clips, there's something I've noticed about new GM Scott Fitterer.

He seems really comfortable with being in charge.

A lot of new GMs have a little trouble with the transition from being one of the assistants in charge of whatever to being the guy in control of everything. That just doesn't seem to be the case with Fitt.

Random observation on my part, but one that I find encouraging.

He seems a bit nervous in front of the microphone, but he’s been around the NFL for a long time and has worked his way up.  The Camp Confidential footage of the war room really showed him in his element.  I wanted the guy from SF but I like most of what he’s done so far.

Honestly, it's probably because he isn't in charge. Rhule has final say.

I don't see them having that kind of dynamic.

When you watch the video of the two of them together, it looks like a really good working relationship.

Fitterer definitely ran the draft.

SF does seem to be in charge of the room, but also appears to listen to everyone's opinion before making a decision and gaining consensus of the direction to go in. I'm sure that there are some who won't challenge an SF mandate, but it seems that he's open to hearing objections/improvements if the concerns are valid AND have supporting arguments.

Observation upon subsequent viewings:  The Fetterer "game ball" that Tepper gave him keeps appearing/disappearing from the desk during some of the scenes. Doesn't take away from the overall storyline being told, but makes one wonder more about the out-of-sequence editing that's taking place and where/when those conversations took place during the overall draft

The first year on the job helps with that there is not as much pressure right away. But is it going to have any impact on how his draft picks or free agent acquisitions pan out? Being confident and being right are two different things. He navigates the draft with a wheeler dealer approach so to fans who have only known Marty Hurney and Dave Gettleman the last 15 years it is shiny and has a new car smell. We took some risks on previously injured linemen in free agency who will be protecting our starting quarterback. Left tackle is once again a largely looming question heading into the season. He will either look like a genius or have folks screaming about him in 6 months. For his sake and the sanity of many fans I hope the gambles pay off.

Honestly, people will be screaming in 6 months no matter how successful or not SF was in the draft.

As long as the team gels and we show early season brightness/success, we'll be in better shape than we were this time last year regardless.

Yes.   Though it looked like Fit sees Rhule as his customer for the draft process. Which in a way, he is.

1)Tremble was the oddest pick with the lowest grades because it was a 3rd rounder TE with a team with so many needs. It was Rhules "favorite guy", and he signaled touchdown when we got him.  Fit referred to it earlier as the a pick coaching staff was high on.   Some GMs would not have made this happen.

2)When Fit suggested going oline earlier, Rhule said yeah, if there's someone there that we want, but remember we have BC, 3rd round tackle, 2nd round Guard.  We waited on oline until BC...we were sweating that the Bengals would take BC, and could have been burned.  It was the only time we had to trade up.  Rhule is a gambler....I love it.

3)Shi Smith and Keith Taylor were prospects that Rhule coached in the senior bowl, Rhule stated he "loved coaching that kid" and that low in the draft the scouting gets fuzzier.

4)Day three Rhule leans to Fit to make sure we're getting Hubbard.

I'm sure there were disagreements un-filmed or on the cutting room floor but from what I saw Fit was a master managing a complicated process with two strong-personality customers.

You do not want to force a player on a coach, and sometimes a coach overrates a player.  We have had an unusual number of Baylor and Temple guys.  Some hits (Robby), some not (Whitehead).

Rhule is a man on mission, and I think Fit is working great with him to get him there.

Yeah, that's kind of how it's supposed to work. It's a good analogy.

Reminds me of Bill Parcells "grocery shopping" comments.

Yeah some GMs don't see it that way....its even worse when they are the GM and owner.
